It's the collective sum of our experiences that makes Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley a powerful, insightful, and welcoming community.The City of Steamboat Springs is hiring an IT Engineering & Security Lead to join their team!**2026 Pay Range: 107,736 - 156,217****GENERAL PURPOSE**The IT Engineering & Security Lead is responsible for safeguarding the City’s digital infrastructure while leading the engineering team that designs, maintains, and evolves the City’s IT systems. This role combines cybersecurity expertise with infrastructure leadership, ensuring secure, reliable, and scalable technology services across the organization.**SUPERVISION RECEIVED**Works under the general supervision of the Information Technology Manager, exercising a high degree of professional judgment and autonomy in decision-making.**SUPERVISION EXERCISED**Provides leadership and direction to technical staff, including systems engineers, contractors, and vendors engaged in IT engineering and security functions.**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.**Leadership & Team Management*** Leads the City’s IT engineering operations, setting goals, priorities, and performance expectations for the Systems Engineering team.* Provides mentorship, coaching, and professional development to direct reports.* Oversees recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluations for engineering staff.* Coordinates with the IT Manager to align engineering and security initiatives with organizational goals.**Cybersecurity Operations*** Implements, and maintains the City’s cybersecurity architecture and policies.* Leads the selection, deployment, and management of security technologies including:

+ Firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, log management, and endpoint protection.

+ Cloud-based security services such as MDR, SIEM, vulnerability management, and penetration testing.* Evaluates and advises on the security of new and existing software solutions.* Serves as the escalation point for security incidents and provides guidance to IT Support operations.* Supports long-term security program development, including audits, risk assessments, and compliance initiatives.**Infrastructure Engineering*** Works closely with IT Systems Engineers to manage and support:

+ On-premises infrastructure (e.g., Active Directory, VMware, SCCM, backup systems).

+ Cloud-based platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune, Exchange Online).

+ Networking infrastructure including switches, firewalls, wireless systems, and VPNs.

+ Physical infrastructure such as server rooms and network closets.* Leads infrastructure monitoring, patching, and lifecycle management.* Oversees the implementation and testing of disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.**Documentation & Communication*** Ensures the engineering team maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation, including network diagrams, system configurations, and security procedures.* Collaborates with departments across the City to ensure secure and efficient technology operations.* Communicates technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.**PERIPHERAL DUTIES*** Participates in after-hours work as needed for upgrades, outages, or emergency response.* Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.**DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS****Education and Experience*** Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.* Minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in cybersecurity, systems administration, or a related IT discipline.* Relevant industry certifications in security or systems administration are preferred (e.g., Security+, CISSP, Microsoft, CompTIA, etc.).**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities*** Strong knowledge of Microsoft infrastructure, cybersecurity best practices, and enterprise IT systems.* Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.* Ability to pass a police background check and meet CJIS & HIPAA certification requirements.* Valid Colorado driver’s license required.**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

**Merit:**

This role is eligible for merit within our pay-for-performance philosophy via our annual performance review process.

Hires after September 1st will take the next year's compensation data into account but would not be eligible for merit until the following year.
