Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

for the Respiratory Care Services department for a

Full-Time, Night shift

at University of Chicago Medicine with the

Pediatrics Team

at our main campus in Hyde Park, Chicago, IL. Our open positions will be supporting the pediatric patient populations. Student opportunities are available for individuals currently enrolled in a Respiratory Therapy program.

Job Summary In this role, the

Registered Respiratory Therapist

administers respiratory care treatments, procedures, and protocols under the direct supervision of department leadership and physician for the pediatric department. Provides patient assessment to determine cardiopulmonary status, implements appropriate patient care protocols, or maintains/improves cardiopulmonary hemodynamic status. Initiates and maintains emergent and non-emergent non-invasive ventilation and invasive mechanical ventilation per department policies and protocols.

Essential Job Functions

Administers supplemental oxygen/medical gas therapy as prescribed by physician or department protocols; documents procedures accurately in the EPIC electronic medical record.

Administers intermittent or continuous medication delivery therapy (bronchodilators, steroids, mucolytics, etc.) as prescribed or via established protocols; documents procedures in real time in the EPIC electronic medical record.

Administers bronchopulmonary hygiene, suctioning, and airway care procedures; implements airway clearance techniques per physician order or department protocols; documents procedures accurately.

Initiates and maintains non-invasive ventilation (BIPAP, CPAP, High Flow Cannula) on an emergent or non-emergent basis; assesses patient status and equipment; adjusts settings for optimal comfort and effectiveness; documents in EPIC.

Initiates, maintains, and checks status of mechanical ventilation; provides thorough assessment and recommends weaning plans per physician order or department protocols; documents accurately.

Provides ventilator management (NIV and mechanical ventilation); performs hemodynamic monitoring/reporting of patient parameters; documents accurately and timely.

Performs arterial blood gas analysis per hospital, department, and accrediting agency guidelines; troubleshoots ABG analyzers; performs quality control and calibration; reports results accurately and timely.

Assists with patient transport within the facility when patients are moved to other areas on oxygen delivery systems or mechanical ventilators.

Required Qualifications

Graduate of an approved, accredited Respiratory Care Program (minimum two years).

Associate’s Degree or Certificate from an accredited body.

Effective and accurate communication and documentation skills (verbal and written).

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.

Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.

Preferred certifications: Neonatal Resuscitation Program, PALS, or ACLS, depending on patient population.
