Water Treatment Plant Assistant Operator Trainee

| Full Time (40 hrs/week)
We are looking for a motivated and dependable
Water Treatment Plant Assistant Operator Trainee
to join our Water & Water Supply Department. This is an excellent entry‑level opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in water treatment operations and public service. You will receive hands‑on, on‑the‑job training under the supervision of certified Water Treatment Plant Operators, with the goal of becoming a licensed Water Treatment Plant Operator.
Key Responsibilities
Learn and assist in the daily operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant
Assist with operating pumps, valves, motors, and related mechanical equipment
Read and record data from meters, gauges, and scales
Assist with chemical dosing, including chlorination and other treatment processes
Collect water samples and assist with basic water quality testing (pH, residual chlorine)
Assist in washing filter beds, screens, and settling basins
Perform routine inspections, basic maintenance, and equipment repairs
Maintain operational logs and assist with reports
Carry out increasingly responsible duties as training progresses
Qualifications Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or New York State High School Equivalency Diploma
Interest in mechanical systems, science, and chemistry
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
Physical condition suitable for plant operations
Preferred Skills
Basic knowledge of chemistry or general science
Strong observation and problem‑solving skills
Dependability, teamwork, and professionalism
Additional Information
Competitive civil service position filled provisionally pending the civil service exam
One‑year traineeship with required progress toward NYS certification
Probationary period runs concurrently with traineeship
Union position (Albany Blue‑Collar Workers Union Local 1961 / AFSCME)
Residency preference given to qualified City of Albany residents
Applicants must reside in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, Greene, Columbia, or Schoharie County
