General Statement of Job: The Lead Dental Assistant performs assigned administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Dental Director, Dental Program Manager and Dental Quality Coordinator. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, tracking inventory of dental supplies, and maintaining efficient patient flow. Clinical duties may include performing direct patient care to assist the dental provider in the examination and treatment of patients such as taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, taking x-rays, setting up and breaking down operatories, maintaining organization in the clinic and sterilization areas, among others.

Essential Functions:

Assists with daily patient flow in clinic areas as needed

Aids in the implementation of systems that improve patient intake, flow, and patient satisfaction

Reports to management ways in which patient care could be improved

Assists in the training of other staff to improve performance and skills

Assists in the inventory of dental supplies as needed

Assists in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives

Oversees the dental assistants present at the clinic to ensure pre-visit planning, robust calls, and daily huddles are carried out successfully.

Provides guidance and support to other dental assistants as needed.

Ensures control testing is completed per equipment need.

Reviews the work of other dental assistants as needed to ensure completeness and consistency of documentation and performance.

Assists in the dissemination of information to dental assistants and other staff as needed, regarding updates, changes, and new clinic policies and procedures.

Perform other clinical duties as assigned under the direction of the Dental Director, Dental Program Manager, and Dental Quality Coordinator and Dentists.

Record patients' medical history, vital statistics and update information in dental records.

Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.

Interview patients to obtain medical and dental information, measure their vital signs, weight, and height.

Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.

Prepare medications and/or dental anesthetics as directed by dentist.

Show patients to operatories and prepare them for the dentist.

Explain treatment procedures, medications, post‑operative and dentist's instructions to patients.

Help dentists examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing tasks as instructed by dentist.

Contacts patients regarding the need of medical clearance or lab results as instructed by the dentist.

Performs essential office operations, including maintaining various logs.

Verifies patient's identification in accordance with the policies and procedures.

Interviews patients and records all gathered information in the patients chart.

Assists the front office staff as needed.

Collects list of supplies needed and maintains the organization of sterilization room and storage areas for dental supplies. Ensures supplies are maintained and ordered in cost‑effective manner.

Maintains and monitors biohazard receptacles.

Maintains OSHA guidelines for the department.

Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man‑made or natural. Additionally, incumbents are required to perform emergency response and management duties for Palm Beach County as required.
