The Lighting Assistant works as a member of the Run Crew and works closely with the Lighting Supervisor to execute designs at the newly constructed Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center. The Run Crew will be an integral part of the production department, supporting the Lighting Department through tech and performances. HVS is located in Garrison, NY, and operates under a unique open‑air amphitheater, the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center; more information is available at hvshakespeare.org. The Lighting Assistant reports to the Production Manager and Producing Director.
Responsibilities
Be present and report on time to all scheduled shifts required, including but not limited to notes calls, changeovers, tech rehearsals, previews, and performances.
Serve as a member of the Run Crew for performances. Provide support in operating and programming lighting cues on an IonXE light console. Support the lighting, audio, & props departments as needed while running shows in repertory throughout the 2026 season.
Install and focus lighting equipment as part of the rotating repertory schedule and the operations of the 2026 HVS Season.
Maintain run of show paperwork under the supervision of the Lighting Supervisor and Production Stage Manager.
Work closely with other artists to build a safe, respectful, and anti‑racist backstage environment.
Practice and promote multicultural competency and sensitivity.
Responsible for the safety, upkeep, and operations of all HVS workspaces and tools under the supervision of the Lighting Supervisor, Production Manager, and Producing Director.
Be required to be in residence in the Hudson Valley for the duration of this contract. Housing and transportation are provided.
Qualifications
Background, degree or equivalent experience in technical theater, focusing on lighting. Basic understanding and experience in hang, focus, and electrical & ladder safety.
Complete understanding of backstage etiquette. A working knowledge of technical theatre practices.
Valid Driver’s license, clean DMV record, and comfortable driving with passengers.
HVS requires all staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19.
Physical ability to climb ladders, operate lifts, reach above one’s head, bend, kneel, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors; comfortable working outdoors during the summer months.
All staff will be required to assist in implementing HVS’s new COVID‑19 Safety Plan, and follow all health and safety protocols, including social distancing, proper mask‑wearing, and COVID testing provided by HVS.
DURATION May 26, 2026 - Sep 27, 2026
SALARY $865 per week from May 26 through September 27th, 2026. Nights and weekends are required. Housing and transportation are included.
