Description Summary:

Creates and develops new products as well as supports existing product enhancements for the aviation division of Whelen also known as Whelen Aerospace Technologies. Candidate will follow the design process starting with concept initiation and follow it through total product assembly and functionality testing. The process will be facilitated by leveraging the understanding of core concepts in Mechanical Engineering. Candidate engages in continuous learning of the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for the design and development of several components of a project or a complex component of a larger project

Contributes to their team or department by applying their knowledge of one or more functional areas

Fully developed professional able to work without direct guidance or direction from others

Confirms system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods.

Confers with Engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide technical information

Researches and analyzes design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications

Supports manufacturing of prototype and pre-production products

Collaborate with other departments such as Manufacturing Engineering, Test Engineering, Electrical Engineering and QA to be able to solve problems related to Engineering issues, manufacturing documentation, and/or bills of materials

Ensure design compliance with RTCA DO-160 (Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment)

Support and coordinate FAA certification activities for projects under FAR Part 23, 25, 27, and 29.

Interface with DERs, FAA representatives, and certification authorities during design reviews and compliance demonstrations.

Education and Experience

BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field w/ 8+ years’ experience or MA/MS degree w/5-6+ years’ experience

Experience in component design using the following manufacturing techniques is a plus: injection molding, die cast molding, machining, vacuum forming and sheet metal fabricating

Proficient knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes

Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Active user/experience with engineering software including SolidWorks®, AutoCAD® or equivalent

Experience with PDM and PLM software and processes is also preferred
