The University of Maine at Farmington - the historic birthplace of teacher education in Maine - invites applications for
Lecturers in our Master in Education and Graduate Certificate in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
for Academic Year 2025-2026 (summer) and Academic Year 2026-2027 (fall and spring).
UMF is the leader in preparing school administrators and teachers to build inclusive, linguistically rich learning environments. UMF equips teachers with the tools and strategies needed to create inclusive, engaging classrooms for students learning English as an additional language. The program emphasizes the proficiency-oriented and communicative language instruction, helping educators design lessons that foster both language development and meaningful interaction among students. The program encourages educators to implement strategies that address diverse linguistic and cultural needs, promoting equity and engagement while enhancing student outcomes in English language learning. UMF serves a diverse population of traditional and non-traditional students across a range of liberal arts and professional programs. To meet the needs of these learners, the University delivers general education and degree‑specific coursework through a variety of modalities, including but not limited to: face‑to‑face, synchronous, and asynchronous instruction.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Curriculum Development:
Design and maintain syllabi aligned with departmental expectation and established course blueprints.
Instructional Delivery:
Lead lesson planning and facilitate instruction via the Brightspace LMS or other instructional software.
Student Support:
Maintain regular correspondence, hold office hours, and provide timely grading and feedback.
Professional Collaboration:
Attend course coordination meetings with the Associate Dean of Graduate Education and complete required orientations and trainings.
Modality Note:
While courses are offered predominantly online, some courses may include other modalities (i.e. synchronous and/or asynchronous).
Sample Courses EDU 503 (Culturally Responsive Pedagogy & Teaching Methodology for Multilingual Learners):
This course is designed with the premise that Multilingual Learners function in more than one language and more than one culture; these experiences influence and impact their learning in the classroom. Students will investigate the value of understanding the backgrounds of Multilingual Learners and how that understanding informs their teaching practices. Students will explore research informed teaching methodologies that support learning in a second language and culture while fostering a respect for other languages and cultures.
EDU 504 (Multilingual Learners: Equity, Inclusion and Family Engagement):
This course will help participants understand the importance of equity, inclusion, and advocacy while fostering culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) family engagement. Students will identify how culture, cultural diversity, and cultural sensitivity apply to working with Multilingual Learners, their families, and their communities.
EDU 505 (Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment for Multilingual Learners):
This course fosters course participants abilities to modify and adapt learning environments that support the diversity of linguistic, cultural, and social experiences that all students bring to the classroom. Through the examination of various ESOL curricula, materials, strategies, and assessments participants will look at language literacy skills, curriculum adaptation for language minorities, and design appropriate assessments connected to learning objectives for Multilingual Learners within the curriculum. Participants will develop a pedagogical understanding that effectively connects culturally situated knowledge to equitable learning experiences.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Master's Degree in Education, TESOL, or a closely related field.
Certification Eligibility:
Must be eligible for the
Maine Endorsement 660 .
Professional Experience:
Minimum of 5 years experience working directly with Multilingual Learners and their families.
Academic Preparation:
Demonstrated academic background adequate for the specific ESOL courses to be taught.
Preferred Qualifications
Teaching Experience:
At least two years of online or hybrid teaching experience at the college level.
Credentialing:
Currently holds a valid
660 Endorsement .
Leadership:
Currently serving in a leadership role for Multilingual Learner programming within a school or agency setting.
