This position is responsible for providing support and resources to students, faculty and staff to enhance and promote student learning at VCC. The position assists students to develop insight, identify their strengths and enhance their personal resilience to resolve challenges and to achieve their academic and personal goals. It provides a continuum of preventive, developmental, remedial and intervention services by linking students to internal and external resources and collaborating with staff and faculty to address issues and remove barriers to student success.

Duties & Responsibilities

Counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection and scheduling, school adjustment, attendance problems and study skills.

Counsels students regarding career or vocational issues including career exploration and planning, job search strategies and interview skills.

Counsel students regarding personal and social issues such as substance abuse, depression, anxiety, family problems, relationships, anger management, etc.

Counsels students in crisis situations such as bereavement, suicidal tendencies and abuse situations.

Consults with teachers, parents, faculty and other professionals such as psychologists or social workers regarding various issues and concerns, and with college administrators and community agencies regarding programs and referrals.

Coordinates the provision of counselling and information programs and services such as career information services, professional development sessions and interactions with other educational institutions.

Develops and coordinates seminars or workshops on topics such as note taking, test or examination anxiety and preparation strategies and time management skills.

Administers and interprets standardized personality, vocational, aptitude and interest tests.

Performs other related duties as required.

Area Hiring Criteria

A Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, or equivalent, supplemented by recent professional counselling experience.

A minimum of three years counselling experience in a comprehensive community college is preferred.

Good knowledge of community services, the public school and the post-secondary education system.

Proven ability to work as a member of a counsellor team as well as independently.

Must be generalists, i.e. skilled and professionally prepared to undertake the counselling of any student.

Must be specialists in some area so as to be able to act as resources to each other as well as provide specialized services.

Possess theoretical knowledge and skills to provide career counselling to an adult student population.

Salary Range – Prorated based on FTE $69.75 as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement.
