Heavy Equipment Mechanic Salary: $23.60 - $30.95 per hour, plus $1,200 yearly tool allowance, and $10-$20 per hour in benefits.

Eligibility This is an open examination. Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent residence status, have a high school diploma or GED, and be at least 18 years old.

General Statement of Duties Removes and installs complete diesel and gasoline‑powered engines, clutches, automatic and standard transmissions, and/or all other component parts; performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Features of the Class Requires thorough knowledge of auto repair to perform duties of a heavy‑duty automotive mechanic; may supervise other automotive mechanics; must be in excellent physical condition.

Examples of Work Diagnoses all mechanical and operating difficulties of vehicles; repairs defects; replaces worn or broken parts; makes proper adjustments to maintain vehicles in proper operating condition; repairs or replaces all electrical equipment such as generators, starters, or hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, and cylinders, and wiring for all systems; conducts road tests after repairs noting performance of engine, transmissions, brakes, and other components; operates standard testing equipment used in modern garages; removes, disassembles, reassembles, and installs entire engines; rear‑end assemblies and brake systems; straightens and welds broken parts when required; makes road calls for emergency repairs; performs necessary inspections.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in repairing all types of equipment owned and operated by the City of Canton; thorough knowledge of trucks, loaders, pumps, street sweepers, and all types of heavy‑duty and automotive equipment; able to perform all duties of a heavy‑duty automotive repairman; excellent physical condition; proficiency in state‑of‑the‑art tools.

Acceptable Experience and Training Must have at least one (1) year of experience as a heavy‑duty automotive mechanic with a background in diesel and hydraulics, or successful completion of a heavy truck/diesel school; or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be willing to attend training schools when requested. Must have a high school diploma or GED and must possess the tools of the trade.

Additional Requirements Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License within two (2) years of the date of hire, and remain up to date with new developments in the automotive repair field.

Examination Information Subsequent to the filing of the application, candidates will be notified of the format, location, date, and time of the examination.

Per OAC Rule 123:1‑9‑01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within four months of the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified.

Rating Eligible candidates will be placed on a list and will remain on that list for one (1) year after receiving a passing score.
