The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining, and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.
12‑hour shifts: 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.; flexible with shifts and days.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED (required)
Completion of a Medical Terminology course (preferred)
Previous experience setting up and maintaining office systems (organizational skills)
Experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology
Experience in a health‑care setting
Experience with Microsoft Office software
Experience with EMR systems
Self‑directed; able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision
Responsibilities
Perform daily activities with minimal supervision
Follow VCUHS policies and procedures; report any violations to the Nurse Manager
Handle, transport, and access medications and related supplies
Schedule & Availability
Work all three shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays
Shift rotation and schedules established with the specific Nurse Manager
Schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements
Physical Requirements
Lifting up to 50 lbs.
Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), repetitive motion
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking
Ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, adapt to frequent change
