Full-time position available in the City Manager's Office of the City of Overland Park.
Job Summary Works under the direction of the Assistant to the City Manager, providing professional staff assistance to the City Manager’s office and department directors on a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks. Assists with the biannual performance measurement program and coordinates an internal employee survey. Assists with the City’s resident survey, when applicable, and the Teen Council Program. Investigates and responds to resident complaints. Conducts research and comprehensive analysis and prepares reports on a range of municipal policies, procedures and services. Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Provides professional staff assistance to the City Manager’s office on a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks.
Assists with the biannual performance measurement program and internal employee survey.
Assists the Communications Manager with the resident survey, when applicable.
Assists with the Teen Council Program as needed.
Becomes familiar with operating and capital budgets, personnel handbook/manuals, city operating procedures and policies, and administrative policies.
Investigates and responds to resident complaints, contacting residents or complainants to comprehend the situation, consulting appropriate staff members, seeking and coordinating corrective action.
Distributes information to the management team and council regarding problems and solutions when appropriate, following up to assure issues are resolved.
Conducts research, comprehensive analysis and prepares reports on a range of municipal policies, procedures, and services.
Attends meetings, seminars, webinars, and provides summary reports of information and discussion.
Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education & Certifications Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business, or related fields applicable to working in City management. Enrollment in a Master of Public Administration degree program or graduation from a Master of Public Administration degree program within the last 12 months is preferred.
Experience Some working experience in a professional environment is preferred.
Skills Good listening, strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently. Strong computer/internet skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Suite. Public speaking and ability to communicate in a professional manner with the public, elected officials, professional staff, and business/community leaders. Basic math and accounting skills. Strong attention to detail.
Mental Requirements Ability to process information quickly, interpret policies and procedures, interpret legislative documents such as ordinances and statutes, work effectively in a multitasking environment, exhibit creative thought processes, recognize and protect confidential information, analyze complex problems and recommend solutions, speak before the public, and carry out assignments through oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements Hand and eye coordination adequate to input computer; visual stamina and acuity adequate to review data daily and spend long periods looking at screens; ability to work in inclement weather; ability to make and receive phone calls; travel locally and outside the state; ability to sit and be attentive for extended periods; ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
Supervisory Responsibility None.
Must successfully pass a background check, drug screen, physical exam and essential functions test.
No City residency requirement.
Normal Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Mon. - Fri.
Salary Range: Grade C, $22.83 - $30.48.
