Summary
The Durham VA Healthcare System is seeking (1) highly skilled/experienced Registered Nurse to serve within Durham Gastroenterology and Liver departments. Demonstrates leadership - experience/ingenious approaches to management of complex patient care. Accountable for the management of patient care - human - fiscal/material resources - & the total environment of the unit. Responsible to ensure that the highest possible quality of care is achieved & a safe therapeutic environment.
Qualifications

English Language Proficiency
In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written & spoken English
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency & accredited by 1 of the following accrediting bodies at time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
Upon achievement of a State license - the individual may be appointed on temporary basis & later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion & graduation from the bridge program

OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing - possession of a current - full - active - & unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program
Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD)
Current - full - active - & unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State - Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. - Puerto Rico) of the United States - or District of Columbia
Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements - but do not possess required licensure - may be appointed at entry step of grade & level applicable to completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to 2 years on a case-by-case-basis.) NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series & performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education & licensure/certification

OR Master's degree in related field with BSN & 2 years of specialized nursing experience - (1) that is equivalent to Nurse II & meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III

Duties
The Registered Nurse working in the Gastroenterology and Liver departments will serve the Veteran population by providing peri-procedural care for Sedated and Non-Sedated Procedures and Hepatology Services
These include but not limited to: Colonoscopy/Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - Endoscopy - ERCP - Upper and Lower Endoscopic Ultrasound - PEG placement - Capsule Endoscopy - Fibro scan - Paracentesis - Esophageal Manometry and other treatment care items
The GI clinic staff also travels to the ER - OR - or ICU to perform cases (including for on-call emergency cases)
The Liver Clinic supports Veterans with different forms of Hepatitis - Cirrhosis - Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Drug Induced liver injuries to name a few

The Durham Liver clinic has monitored a cure rate for HCV at 1223 patients which makes this VA #1 in treatment rates for 2017
Duties include but not are not limited to: Monitoring and sedating patients for GI Procedures and guided by the Moderate Sedation policy MCM 558-01-5.8 (pre - intra and post procedure)
Assisting physicians with the technical aspects of endoscopic procedures within the endoscopy unit and during on-call or travel cases
Preparing patients scheduled for endoscopic or biopsy procedures
Monitoring the technicians and other support personnel related to safe patient care
Education for patients and families related to pre-and post-procedures and medications - including diet and medication regimens
Communicating with patients by telephone triage - secure messaging - or Annie App (text application)
Participating in conferences and awareness events for GI and Liver cancers
Scheduling appointments for procedures for the providers
Managing the Clinical Case Registry and HCV Dashboard
Tracking and identifying the patient appropriate for treatment of Liver disease
Active in conferences and awareness programs for HCV amongst Veterans
Case Management of patients needing follow-up labs and screening of clinical markers
Assisting with management of the National Colo-rectal Cancer Screening Reminders
Preferred Experience: Minimum of (2) years successful nursing experience
Prior experience caring for patients in Gastroenterology or Intensive Care Units
Demonstrated experience to manage patients using conscious sedation
Demonstrated outcomes in working effectively with the interdisciplinary team in the outpatient setting
Demonstrated ability to function independently - be flexible and project effective communication with Veteran population
Demonstrated leadership activities evident by having a charge nurse role and/or participating in unit or hospital based committees
