Job Description Perform a combination of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks related to roadway maintenance. Operate light and medium‑duties equipment, conduct emergency roadway operations as an essential employee, and maintain equipment and safety protocols.

How You Will Contribute

Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light and medium‑duty equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.

Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations. Clear roadways, remove debris, and provide traffic control.

Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy‑duty highway equipment and vehicles.

Job Safety: Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, identify hazards, and comply with OSHA, VOSHA, MUTCD, and VDOT safety regulations.

Manual Labor: Work as part of the crew to complete projects, using hand and power tools.

Preventive Maintenance: Perform maintenance repair, replacement, and preventive maintenance; complete pre‑trip inspections.

Traffic Control Devices: Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures; assist in inventory tracking.

Follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, complete documentation.

Maintain inventory records and complete simple paperwork.

Obtain a valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain them.

Operate and maintain hand, power, light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Read and interpret plans and sketches.

Work on a team to complete assignments.

Apply work zone safety, traffic controls, flagging operations, and MUTCD.

Understand federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.

Know highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Have working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.

Minimum Qualifications

Effective oral and written communication.

Obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain them; comply with DOT and VDOT policies.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Read and follow oral and written instructions.

Know highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Safety shoes required.

Operate and maintain hand and power tools.

Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy‑duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Additional Considerations

Training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related field desired.

Experience in emergency operations: snow removal, storm cleanup, and accident cleanup.

Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.

Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.

Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements.
