Job Posting Title: Senior Customs Specialist, HTS Classification

Time Type: Full Time

Summary The HTS Classification Specialist is responsible for ensuring accurate classification of products under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and maintaining compliance with applicable U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and international customs regulations. This position requires in-depth knowledge of tariff classification principles and the ability to analyze technical product data to determine proper tariff codes while supporting organizational trade compliance objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct accurate HTS classification of goods in accordance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and international customs laws, rulings, and regulations

Analyze technical product data, schematics, specifications, and material composition to determine proper tariff codes

Apply General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs) and chapter-specific notes to resolve complex classification challenges

Research and interpret customs rulings, CBP guidance documents, court cases, and World Customs Organization (WCO) classification decisions

Draft, review, and submit binding ruling requests to CBP as needed

Participate in classification audits, maintain and update classification databases and audit records ensuring accuracy and data integrity

Monitor and interpret regulatory updates including HTS revisions, Explanatory Notes, and changes to international classification standards

Maintain comprehensive documentation of classification decisions, rationale, and supporting research

Support trade compliance programs including FTA qualification, duty drawback, and special trade programs

Identify tariff engineering and duty optimization opportunities to support cost-reduction initiatives

Train and mentor team members on classification methodology, research techniques, and regulatory changes

Educational background / Work experience

Bachelor’s degree in International Trade, Business, Supply Chain, or related field; equivalent experience considered in lieu of degree

Minimum 4 years of experience in customs classification, brokerage, or trade compliance

U.S. Customs Broker License preferred or actively pursuing certification; other related certifications (e.g., CCS, CES) a plus.

In-depth knowledge of the HTSUS and General Rules of Interpretation (GRIs)

Thorough understanding of CBP regulations, customs procedures, and international trade law

Strong analytical and research skills with ability to interpret legal and technical documents

Demonstrated experience researching and applying CBP rulings and classification precedents

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities with high attention to detail

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

Preferred Qualifications

5+ years of progressive experience in HTS classification

Experience managing binding ruling submissions, CBP protests, or administrative appeals

Knowledge of free trade agreement rules of origin (USMCA, etc.)

Familiarity with duty drawback, foreign trade zones, or customs duty relief programs

Background in industries with complex classification requirements (electronics, chemicals, machinery, textiles, automotive)

Experience with trade compliance systems (SAP GTS, Integration Point, MIC, or similar platforms)

For this position, the expected base pay is: $62,500 - $84,500 / Annual. Actual base compensation will be determined based on various factors including job-related knowledge, skills, experience, geographic location and other objective business considerations. This position can be virtual in the USA.
