Interpreter Services Department . This position is based on-site at Hyde Park.

In this role, the

Medical Healthcare Interpreter – Arabic,

facilitates communication between patients and families with limited English proficiency (LEP) and their physicians, nurses, lab technicians and other healthcare providers. The

Medical Healthcare Interpreter – Arabic

must be experienced and demonstrate proficiency and ability to communicate medical information accurately in both English and Arabic. Medical healthcare interpreters must also have the ability to orally interpret. The interpreter must have the ability to orally translate essential medical documents such as essential hospital documents. The medical health care interpreter must practice principles of confidentiality, impartiality, respect, professionalism, integrity, accuracy, and cultural competence when serving our Limited English Proficient patients. Medical healthcare interpreters must demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations.

Furthermore, medical healthcare interpreters must adhere to the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in HealthCare and the International Medical Interpreter Association’s Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice.

Medical healthcare interpreters are expected to educate other members of the healthcare team regarding the duties, requirements and ethical standards involved in healthcare interpreting and work on coordinating with agencies/outside interpreters on dividing assignments when needed. Additionally, Medical Healthcare Interpreters advocate on behalf of patients to help facilitate communication with referring physicians and embassies to obtain demographic and medical information for UChicago Medicine. Communicates and cooperates with other UChicago Medicine departments, clinics, and physicians to assist international visitors. Works closely with case managers, pharmacy, and other clinical departments.

Essential Job Functions

Face-to-face interpreting between patients and providers in such a way that the original meaning is maintained

Medical healthcare interpreters act in the interest of the shared goal of achieving the wellbeing of the patient

Administrative duties include dispatching and scheduling duties, collecting and entering encounter data for monthly reports and participating in departmental initiatives.

Occasional oral translation of clinical / procedural documents or non-clinical into the language of the patient as well as telephonic or video medical healthcare interpretation

Educate medical staff and physicians to access all medical healthcare interpreter services and maintain strict patient confidentiality

Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of UChicago Medicine

Required Qualifications

Undergraduate degree from an accredited University is preferred

Successful completion of a formal program in medical interpreting Certification by CCHI or CMI within 1 year of hiring

Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Medical Health Care Interpreter in an acute care specialty medical center is preferred

Ability to sustain a busy and flexible work schedule

Excellent grammatical skills in both languages

Extensive knowledge of medical terminology especially in areas of Peds/Adult Hematology Oncology, Organ Transplant, Genetics, Neurology/Neurosurgery, ENT, Peds/Adult Orthopedics, Human Anatomy, Physiology, and medical procedures

Interpersonal skills are required with strong orientation to customer services

Strong understanding of cultural diversity and how it affects clinical encounters

In this role, we anticipate that you will generally work approximately 40 hours per week. We anticipate that you will generally be scheduled to work the day shift, from approximately 8:30am-5:00pm and will not be scheduled for on-call shifts. We anticipate you will be scheduled to work 75% at the Hyde Park campus and 25% from home. The days of the week that you are scheduled will not vary depending on the week, but we anticipate that you will be scheduled to work on weekdays.

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
