About Us General Motors Research Labs is an applied research center focusing on creating and evaluating innovations for future vehicles. Our researchers conduct independent technical work, while initiating and leading collaborative projects with colleagues at academia and industry globally.

As a member of General Motors Research Labs, the Advanced Controls group offers exciting opportunities for motivated researchers to conduct research in AI and control for vehicle systems, active safety, automated driving, cooperative driving, and additional automotive applications. We are seeking a manager and leader with outstanding capabilities to assist in developing cutting edge technologies for GM’s future vehicles.

What You Will Do

Manage and lead the development of team members including motivation and career development of experienced researchers.

Lead the generation and evaluation of new innovative technologies and concepts where appropriate

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments to grow core technical skills and competencies.

Propose, initiate, plan and execute research projects; promote projects, ideas and novel concepts for enhancing control applications

Integrate internally and externally developed knowledge in new ways to enhance the enterprise.

Provide insightful analysis of technology trends and identify competency and skill needs.

Manage relationships and grow partnership with divisional staffs to meet project objectives

Define and plan technical programs and identify innovative strategies.

Develop a global network with key universities, government labs, and industrial labs to access the world’s best technology

Lead technical discussions and reviews as an expert in your field, communicate results and progress across the organization.

Grow and diversify personal skills and competency base.

Act as a mentor to junior technical staff.

Managing day to day activities of researchers, including setting objectives, managing results, and evaluating/coaching individual performance

Recruit and train technical team members in the specialized area

Engage the team to accomplish projects with high quality, high impact and fast delivery

Plan and manage budget and use resources effectively

A strong candidate will have

U.S. citizenship required to comply with federal government contract provision expressly restricting role to U.S. citizens.

Advanced (PhD) degree in science/engineering disciplines

Expertise in Control theory

In-depth knowledge in state-of-the-art AI for controls applications

Knowledge in vehicle dynamics

Knowledge in reinforcement learning

People and Technical leader, 5+ years work experience

Proven ability to develop technical charter, strategies, project goals and plans, oversee budgets and resources, define and execute projects with technical partners

High level of interpersonal skills: experience in working effectively with team members, parallel teams, colleagues and business partners, locally and internationally

Demonstrated ability to bust through barriers to execute project plans, perform internal marketing, persuade, overcome objections and make decisions with uncomplete information

Entrepreneurial spirit coupled with execution skills, ability to demonstrate value creation and results
