Job Description SUMMARY
The Shift Process Engineer serves as both the technical expert & leader for operations in the batch process area of the facility.
This engineer will be responsible for the overall performance of the process, including monitoring, optimizing, troubleshooting various chemical manufacturing production lines.
This role partners with the shift supervisor to ensure safe, efficient, compliant production while addressing technical issues, maintaining equipment & leading the shift team to meet production goals.
Will also assist with trials/new product development as they are transitioned to commercial processes.
This position will lead into full-time day position, if desired, within2 years or sooner.
Excellent entry level position into the chemical industry.
Duties/Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, plant-specific safety/environmental regulations; conduct risk assessments, participate in safety audits, PHA’s/PSSR’s; issue Safe Work Permits; respond to emergencies as needed
In partnership with the shift supervisor and the crew, responsible for writing, updating, and ensuring adherence to procedures, work instructions, and forms
Oversee product quality by monitoring process conditions, analyzing testing data, and ensuring adherence to specifications within acceptable tolerances
Collaborate with quality assurance teams to address non-conformances and implement corrective actions
Work closely with supervisors, operators, technicians, other shift personnel to ensure smooth operations
Provide technical guidance/training to staff/operators
Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reduction, energy efficiency
Participate in root cause analyses
Monitor chemical processes, equipment performance, and production metrics using DCS, PLC’s and manual records
Optimize process parameters to maximize yield, quality & efficiency while minimizing waste/ energy use
Diagnose and resolve process-related issues, such as equipment malfunctions, product quality deviations, or production bottlenecks
Analyze real-time data to identify and address deviations from standard operating conditions
Coordinate with maintenance to perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, repairs
Identify/report equipment issues that could impact production/safety
Job Requirements
B.S., Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
0-2 years of experience. Plus would be chemical manufacturing experience. Prior co‑op or internships would be preferred/ideal
Knowledge of process control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA)
Knowledge of chemical process design, unit operations, and thermodynamics
Familiarity with P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and equipment specifications
Problem‑solving and analytical skills
Strong leadership skills
Effective communication and teamwork abilities
Ability to work under pressure and make decisions in a fast‑paced environment
Must be comfortable working in an industrial environments with exposure to chemicals, noise, and temperature variations
