Position Objective/Description Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a Backhoe for laying and backfilling water, sewer and storm drain lines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Drives and uses bucket of the backhoe to dig, excavate and move dirt, rock, gravel or combination
Observes markings on the ground, hand signals and stakes to remove material
Read and interpret site plans and blueprints, survey markers and stakes
Locate underground services, such as pipes and wires, prior to beginning work
Avoid hazards or obstructions to ensure efficient operation of the backhoe
May be asked to run other equipment, including dozer and loaders
Maintain cleanliness and good condition of trucks
Perform minor maintenance to include cleaning, lubricating and refilling equipment
Check fluid levels and change implements or attachments
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Work closely with ground crew to achieve project objectives
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of backhoe operations including capacities and physical limitations, and issues involved in ground disturbance and compaction
Safe driving abilities and strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures
Able to listen, follow directions, and have a willingness to continue to enhance skills
Effective communications with jobsite supervisor and co-workers
General knowledge of road construction processes.
Demonstrate a safety first attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.
Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
Ability to work nights and weekends when necessary
Must have reliable transportation, and ability to travel to assigned worksite
Physical Demands
Constant physical effort, including extended sitting for at least 8 hour shift
Intermittent walking and standing on a construction site.
Climb intermittently
Regularly twist, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch to perform duties
Regularly reach above shoulder level
Must be physically able to repetitively lift, push, pull and/or carry at least 50 pounds occasionally, and sometimes heavier weight.
Agility, balance, and manual dexterity, as well as arm-hand steadiness
Able to hear and respond to oral instructions in a noisy environment.
Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach and grasp with hands and arms.
Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination.
Good vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus
Education / Experience
High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
Three (3) years’ experience (recent) working as a Backhoe Operator.
Active Driver’s license
Work Environment Regularly works in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity. Frequently works near heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. Work may involve exposure to a variety of substances found on construction site such as oil, grease, gasoline, concrete and diesel fuel. Periodically exposed to fumes, lubricants, airborne particles and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
