POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under direction, the Animal Care Lorikeet seasonal employee monitors the lorikeet aviary during public feedings and performs routine work assignments involving the daily care of the animals, exhibits, and holding areas.
This position may allow for occasional exposure or cross‑training in other areas but will primarily work in the Lorikeet Aviary.
This is a seasonal position, working 40 hours per week. Seasonal start and end dates can vary depending on individual availability and team needs. Selected candidates must be available to work during one of the below timeframes:
March 1 – October 31
May 1 – September 7
POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

Interacts with Zoo & Aquarium guests and the public, including:
Monitoring guests, volunteers, and birds to ensure a safe and fun experience during public feedings.
Engaging with visitors to answer questions about the Zoo & Aquarium and animals.
50%
Assists with daily maintenance of exhibits and holding areas, including:
Cleaning exhibits, holding stalls and animal care areas.
Reporting maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to appropriate manager.
Performing minor repairs and improvements of exhibits, under supervision.
25%
Assists with the daily care of assigned animals, including:
Preparing and feeding diets.
Observing, logging, and reporting issues concerning animal behavior, health, and welfare.
Aiding with animal health procedures, under supervision.
Assisting with the creation of various enrichment items/strategies.
20%
Exposure or cross‑training in other animal areas.
5%
*This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
Associate degree, bachelor’s Degree, or completing coursework for a degree in biology, animal science, zoology or related field desired.
EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:
Knowledge of animal behavior and procedures used for the proper care of handling exotic and domestic animals.
Strong observational skills and ability to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health and behavior.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including procedures for care and maintenance of animals, exhibit, service and holding areas.
Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have valid driver’s license.
Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
Must have sufficient mobility to ensure a safe work environment.
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
Must be able to tolerate working outdoors in all elements and extreme heat.
Must be able to manage stress and make immediate decisions concerning the safety of animals, staff, or the public.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
Must pass a background and drug screening.
