Job Purpose and Objectives Responsible for responding to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and to transport the patient to a medical facility.
Essential Functions
Responds to ambulance calls and assists in providing emergency medical treatment
Performs CPR, dresses and manages wounds, splint fractures, and administers oxygen
Transports patients to proper facilities and prepares reports on patients conditions
Drives, inventories, replaces stock, and maintains upkeep of ambulance
Rescues persons trapped in accident situations
Participates in training sessions
Maintains the station house and equipment
Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic
Position Requirements
High school diploma or other equivalent
One year of ambulance and emergency medical care experience required (AEMT)
Three years in ambulance and emergency care experience (Paramedic)
Certifications / Licenses
State of Kansas Certification as Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, or Paramedic
Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS), within (1) year of hire or promotion (AEMT & Paramedic)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification (PALS or PEPP), within (1) year of hire or promotion (AEMT & Paramedic)
NIMS/ICS Training – Introduction level 100 & 700, within (6) months of hire
Valid Driver’s License
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
Knowledge of emergency medical care and ambulance procedures
Knowledge of city and county geography
Ability to analyze field situations and determine appropriate action
Ability to drive an ambulance, operate radio equipment, splinting equipment, medical equipment, and other related equipment
Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently
Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner
Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment
Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Problem solving and critical thinking skills
Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities
Ability to communicate in a professional, calm, and courteous manner with the general public and employees
