Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit The Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships (CYFCP) builds the capacity of families, service providers, researchers, teachers, and communities to promote the well‑being of children and youth. The center carries out basic, applied, and action research, and translates research into effective programs and practice and policies.

Position Summary The Economist will become a key member of a dynamic research team by providing critical research expertise for complex, high‑dimensional data analyses. The Economist will collaborate on a broad portfolio of grant‑ and contract‑funded research and analysis projects. The Economist will build econometric models to analyze, assess, and evaluate projects and their economic impacts or cost‑savings. The Economist will work with colleagues across the Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships to design and implement grant‑funded research projects and present research findings to external funders in whitepapers, reports, presentations, and peer‑reviewed articles.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in economics, business administration, finance, statistics, public policy, or related social science field or bachelor’s degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Expertise in conducting evaluations of policies and programs in the areas of basic and applied research and development. Demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis for large datasets.

Exemplary oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. If selected to interview for the position, writing samples will be required.

Works well independently and has strong time management and prioritization skills. Proficiency in Python, R, SAS , STATA , SPSS and/or SQL .

Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience conducting social benefit‑cost analysis and foundational knowledge in public economics.

Experience in a research, consulting, or similar setting requiring preparation of and delivery on grant and contract proposals and projects.

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience applying simultaneous equation, hazard, and vector autoregression models. Experience in developing novel, advanced statistical methods.

Experience working with large datasets.

Proficiency in Python or a comparable scripting language to perform machine learning tasks (such as text analysis) or automated processes (such as web‑scraping).

Experience in communicating and disseminating findings to a broad and diverse audience through written and oral presentation to diverse public constituencies.

Applicants currently enrolled in or intending to enroll in Business Administration PhD program with a concentration in Economics, preferably UNCG .

Research Design

The

Economist

will utilize a broad knowledge of study designs and econometric methods in drafting an appropriate evaluation plan for projects to meet the goals of efforts including: determination of the purpose of the evaluation, audience, measurement to be used, frequency of data collection, sample size, questions of the evaluation, and design constraints.

The

Economist

will also be involved, together with other CYFCP staff, in developing required Data Use Agreements, IRB Applications, Data Security Protocols, and other agreements needed to protect confidential and protected data sources.

The Economist will serve as a resource to advise students, staff and researchers on statistical methods, data analysis and data collection and management design.

will be responsible for data acquisition and integrity including significant effort at retrieving, cleaning, organizing, importing, matching, and aggregating data sets as needed while keeping thorough scripts, codebooks, and other records needed to document data handling.

Economic Analysis

The

Economist

will apply econometric methods to evaluate and identify effects of policies and programs, possibly including: difference‑in‑difference, regression discontinuity, instrumental variables, propensity score matching, and synthetic control, and apply these econometric techniques to ongoing and future evaluation and assessment project for non‑profits, state and local government, and other organizations.

The

Economist

will be responsible for presenting findings and assisting in authoring reports, papers, and publications as required by funders.

Work with CYFCP Director and staff to seek, prepare, manage, and administer grants and awards.

The Economist may be asked to assist with training/working with undergraduate students within the economics department as needed and when appropriate.
