Basic Purpose Positions within this job family are assigned responsibilities on a statewide basis for implementing, analyzing, and maintaining security systems at state prison facilities. Employees conduct feasibility studies, perform surveys to audit and maintain, and make recommendations to design telecommunications, RF radio communications systems, closed circuit video surveillance systems, electronic perimeter‑intrusion security systems, and specialized high‑security mogul detention lock‑and‑key systems. Employees ensure agency network infrastructure co‑operate and fiber are maintained.
Typical Functions
Performs surveys and studies and recommends new security systems or revisions to upgrade existing security systems.
Maintains the agency’s prison facility operational requirements and assesses technical feasibility of communications, security systems, and high‑security mogul detention locking systems.
Serves as a technical consultant in design, analysis, and application of communication systems using analog, digital, RF and fiber optic networking of security systems; high‑security detention locking systems and commercial locking systems for state‑of‑the‑art technology, ensuring cost‑efficiency.
Obtains quotes for purchase orders or state bid process or conducts telephone bids; writes complex technical specifications, plans budgetary requirements, and analyzes technical specifications for bid compliance.
Serves as security system consultant and advanced detention lock/key instructor for the Department of Corrections.
Uses locksmith equipment to install and maintain high‑security lock/key systems at various facilities. Includes pneumatic and electronic locks and maintains electronic interconnects associated with mechanical locking systems.
Installs, maintains, and upgrades fiber optic and cabling infrastructure to ensure reliable and high‑speed connectivity across all agency facilities.
Education and Experience A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic security systems, telecommunications systems, or related equipment, or 2 years experience as a Correctional Security Technician with the Department of Corrections.
Preferred:
Experience in a correctional or high‑security environment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Knowledge of electronic telecommunications systems application, design, and maintenance. Understanding of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) laws. Expertise in perimeter intrusion detection systems and video surveillance systems application, design, and maintenance. Proficiency in high‑security detention mogul locking systems applications, design, and maintenance. Ability to read and interpret schematics and blueprints. Familiarity with security and detention instructional techniques and practices. Strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Excellent communication skills. Physical ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. Full color vision to accurately interpret wiring and system indicators.
Special Requirements Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job‑related travel, including overnights, normally associated with this position and able to work in all environments.
