The Costumer will assist in creating costumes for Sight & Sound Films and Theatre shows. The role requires flexibility in skillset and tasks performed and will alternate seasons between Films and Theatres. The Films responsibilities may include Costumer, First Hand, Draper or Stitcher tasks, while the Theatres Costume Shop role will primarily be Stitcher responsibilities. This position reports to the Theatre Costume Shop Manager, and during Films seasons will receive daily direction from the Films Costume Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Films
Support the in-house manufacturing process by cutting and sewing bespoke costumes.
Altering and fitting all built or purchased costumes as directed by the Costume Designer.
Oversee workflow for Stitchers to determine best practices for construction techniques for film-related historical garments.
Assist Costume Designer or Wardrobe Supervisor as needed throughout the project.
Support Costume Supervisor with needs specific to the project in order to hit all timeline, build, and budget goals.
Pulling and preparations for on-set logistics needs.
Potential to assist on set as opportunity arises, including assisting with needs related to maintenance and laundry.
Theatres
Constructing costumes for current theatre show builds.
Assist with fittings and alterations seasons, dress rehearsals, and show openings.
Support satellite locations, including production cutting and sewing, tech pack prep, or assorted projects to support new costume build.
Prerequisites
Strong experience in building historical costumes, fashion garments or theatre costumes, with high attention to detail.
Experience with domestic and industrial sewing machines and sergers.
Knowledgeable in a variety of hand and machine sewing techniques.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide variety of coworkers at different levels of skill and knowledge.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions.
Ability and willingness to work long hours during heavy build and tech periods, with periodically required availability nights, weekends, and the occasional holiday.
Ability and willingness to travel to satellite locations to support Theatre show openings as needed.
Ability to work independently, with strong project management skills to assure quality and efficient use of time to achieve timeline and budget goals for assigned Costume Shop Theatre projects.
