About the Opportunity This open position is with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The selected candidate will work on site in either Akron, Ohio or Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Responsibilities The Substation Design Oversight Engineer must be self‑directed and will manage engineering designs, equipment and standards for the External Engineering group. The role involves:
Overseeing multiple substation design projects with external design firms.
Creating engineering designs and work scope for substation projects (steel structures, foundations, clearances, layout drawings, grounding, lightning protection, schematics, wiring diagrams).
Conducting design reviews (QA/QC checklists, one‑lines, schematics, detail wiring diagrams, nameplates).
Documenting design issues in the accuracy tracker database.
Ensuring designs support a safe environment for personnel, contractors and the public.
Reviewing NESC clearance requirements and safeguarding public safety.
Coordinating communication across business units and convening project schedule compliance meetings.
Supporting FirstEnergy’s organizational performance and values through responsible work performance.
Qualifications
B.S. in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering (ABET accredited) or an equivalent professional experience (Professional Engineer’s license, advanced degree, etc.).
Minimum of two years of engineering experience.
FE Certificate preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
Knowledge of FileNet, SAP and Cascade a plus but not required.
Commitment to a safety culture.
Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines and shifting priorities.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Organizational, computer, and problem‑solving abilities.
Self‑directed and independent of detailed instruction.
