The Position The Solution Design Engineer I, reporting to the Director of Industrial Engineering and Solution Design, supports the design of innovative, scalable, and cost‑effective operational solutions for new and existing customers. This role works under the guidance of senior engineers and collaborates cross‑functionally with sales, operations, and other stakeholders to ensure customer requirements are accurately reflected in proposed solutions and aligned with Barrett Distribution Centers’ operational objectives.

The Solution Design Engineer I contributes to the development of high‑quality solutions by assisting with process design, facility layouts, labor analysis, and system considerations that support operational efficiency, service levels, and overall performance.

This position works Monday through Friday, from 9am‑5:30pm.

The compensation range for this position is $83K‑$96K, depending on experience.

Your Day‑to‑Day

Solution Development: Support the design of end‑to‑end operational solutions for new business opportunities, including facility layouts, material handling equipment selection, labor planning, and basic technology integration, under the guidance of senior engineers.

Customer Engagement: Participate in customer and internal discussions to understand business needs, operational constraints, and service expectations; assist in translating requirements into design inputs and specifications.

Data Analysis & Modeling: Analyze historical and forecasted data to support throughput, storage capacity, and labor planning using established models, tools, and templates.

Proposal Support: Assist in developing solution narratives, cost models, and ROI analyses for RFP responses and new business proposals; support internal and customer presentations.

Technology Integration: Support the evaluation and incorporation of standard automation technologies, systems, and process flows into proposed solutions.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with sales, operations, engineering, IT, and project management teams to support solution development and implementation efforts.

Documentation & Communication: Prepare design documentation, CAD layouts, and presentation materials to communicate solution concepts, assumptions, and benefits.

Industry Best Practices: Apply industry‑accepted technologies, automation concepts, and best practices in solution design while developing technical and business expertise.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Travel: Moderate travel required to customer sites and company facilities (approximately 30%, up to 50% during peak project phases).

What You Bring To The Table

Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field required.

Up to Two (2) years’ experience in solution design, business process engineering, warehousing, production environment, or related experience required.

Working knowledge of solution design and warehouse engineering principles.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools and AutoCAD.

Solid understanding of warehouse operations and industry best practices.

Basic to working knowledge of WMS functionality and concepts.

Ability to adjust training presentations to skill set of audience.

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Ability to deal with a high level of ambiguity, balance competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines. Strong emphasis on organizational skills and attention to detail.

Must demonstrate high level of interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work well under pressure and problem solve across a variety of business processes.
