Overview AYON Studio, a growing architecture and preservation practice in NYC, seeks a Preservation Architect to help us further our mission, achieve our vision, and uphold our values. We are a service-focused, community-driven firm dedicated to heritage conservation and preservation advocacy. We look to transform the built environment with contemporary, sustainable and architecturally appropriate interventions.
Responsibilities
Documentation, condition assessments and design of interventions on existing buildings.
Lead conservation, adaptive reuse, and rehabilitation projects (interior restoration, building envelope repairs, interior and exterior alterations).
Work with leadership and staff to assess condition of historic properties, develop design solutions, and prepare construction documents.
FIPS inspection and reporting; assist with filings with regulatory agencies (LPC, DOB, SHPO, NPS, etc.).
Spearhead bid procurement and construction contract administration phases.
Review contractor work, samples, and submittals during construction.
Coordinate project progress with Project Manager and Principal; update office marketing material.
Assist in in-house business development tasks.
Qualifications
Understanding of historic buildings’ materials, construction assemblies, decay patterns, and deterioration causes.
Ability to detail and specify appropriate repairs; experience with building envelope repairs and interior renovations.
Experience with LPC, SHPO, and DOB submissions; adaptability to dynamic work environments.
Experience preparing construction documents and providing contract administration services.
Excellent communication skills; self-driven with ability to manage multiple projects.
Experience with FIPS compliance desired.
Architectural degree and/or M.Sc. in Historic Preservation or related field; 4–8 years of experience.
Proficiency in CAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office.
Hand sketching skills for on-site documentation; willingness to perform fieldwork including scaffold.
Architectural licensure or progress toward completion of ARE exams desired but not required.
Full‑time in‑person position at Union Square office; remote applicants will not be considered.
