Working as a juvenile justice detention officer is one of the most rewarding and challenging career opportunities in the State of Florida.
As an officer, your primary responsibility is to ensure public safety by providing a safe and secure environment for troubled youth in a structured setting. You will be the first DJJ employee to interact with juvenile offenders, leading, coaching, mentoring, and working with youth to promote a culture of dignity, respect, and accountability. Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay: $1,676.76 (subject to internal promotion rules)
Florida Statute 985.66
Be at least 19 years of age.
Be a high school graduate or its equivalent.
Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, or have received a dishonorable discharge.
Abide by all provisions of s. 985.644 (1) regarding fingerprinting and background investigations.
Execute and submit an affidavit‑of‑application attesting to compliance with subparagraphs 1-4.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of department policies and procedures for care, custody and control of youth; facility operating procedures; safety procedures and strip search protocols; maintaining sanitary conditions of the facility.
Skill in recognizing signs of potential suicide or depression and changes in youth behavior; addressing issues of youth experiencing problems; determining appropriate level of use of force; providing constructive feedback; preparing and maintaining reports and records; performing basic arithmetic.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing, and to work effectively with youth, co‑workers, supervisors and the public.
Special Notes DJJ detention facilities operate 24/7/365 and positions require shift schedules, including rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays, with possible overtime or double shifts.
Applicants must be subject to sex offender checks, criminal background checks, and pre‑employment drug screening.
Drivers licensed or required for certain positions must have a valid Florida driver’s license and a clean record. Training and certification in direct care required within 180 days. Ergometric IMPACT Assessment and Training Test may be required for non‑state system workers.
Staffing must comply with Florida law and non‑discrimination. The State of Florida is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Accommodation requests must be submitted in advance. The State supports a drug‑free workplace; employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug testing.
