Information Technology Specialist 2 (NY HELPs) – 9731 Salary: $66,951 – $85,138 per year (base pay range listed in the job posting). Pay is determined by skills and experience.

Under the direction of a Manager Information Technology Services 1 (Data Communications), SG‑27, within the Chief Technology Office / Shared Platform Services / Containers as a Service, the Information Technology Specialist 2, SG‑18, will provide related services on the Google Cloud Platform.

Duties

Work with cloud development teams to support current and future needs in our containerized environment.

Troubleshoot issues of connectivity, load balancing, scaling, and monitoring.

Work with containerized workloads in a cloud hosting environment such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.

Provide administration, maintenance, and support of Google Kubernetes Engine.

Assist clients and stakeholders with issues on the Google Cloud Platform.

Document work in work logs.

Qualifications

Open Competitive: A bachelor’s or higher‑level degree including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science.

OR a bachelor’s or higher‑level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology.

OR 60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology.

OR two years of professional experience in information technology.

Promotion: Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 1, SG‑14.

Transfer: Open to NYS employees with one year of permanent competitive service as an Information Technology Specialist 2 or Information Technology Specialist 2 Programming, G‑18; or a title G‑16 or above deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.

Eligible for 55b/c designation.

Appointment Requirements

The appointment and continued employment are contingent upon obtaining and/or maintaining New York State residency within six months of hiring.

Appointment is not final until all agency approvals have been granted.

Additional Comments ITS will not offer permanent employment to any candidate unless the candidate provides documentation that they are authorized to accept work in the United States on a permanent basis. ITS does not hire F‑1 or H‑1 visa holders for permanent employment or sponsor non‑immigrant aliens for temporary work authorization visas or for permanent residence.

Some positions may require fingerprinting and up to 25% travel or lifting up to 50 lbs. Positions are pending Civil Service approval and may be advertised further if selected for interview.

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, with no examination required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. In May 2024, a successfully performing temporary NY HELPS employee may be changed to permanent non‑competitive status and the official probationary period will begin. Within one year of permanent appointment, employees hired under NY HELPS will be converted to competitive status without having to compete in an examination.
