Department Overview The Field Engineer is responsible for the implementation of complex communication system infrastructure and technical support of specialized sub‑systems and product applications, including troubleshooting software‑driven electronics, IP networks, server and network hardware, and performance verification and optimization of RF and broadband architecture including legacy analog, advanced digital P25, and data infrastructure.
Job Description REMOTE + TRAVEL
Responsibilities
Team with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales personnel to effectively design, implement, optimize, test, cutover, and document advanced communication systems that meet or exceed customer expectations.
Provide weekly reports of activities and accomplishments.
Utilize system design drawings, planners, and product documentation to oversee onsite installation of network, server, and RF equipment. Provide as‑built information for the final system documentation package.
Utilize network design tools, formalized process documents, and customer input to perform onsite and remote configuration of network, server, RF, and databases. Provide as‑configured documentation and baseline reports.
Use system logs and tools to troubleshoot onsite and remote networks, servers, databases, and RF infrastructure. Verify system logs and event monitoring applications are clear of faults.
Use product and system test plans to perform acceptance testing. Correct deficiencies found during testing. Provide accepted test results for the final system documentation package.
Use product specifications, FCC license data, and design parameters to perform performance verification/optimization of advanced digital and legacy analog RF infrastructure. Provide baseline measurement data and accepted test results for the final system documentation package.
Use project design drawings and customer current system information to design/develop solutions to difficult technical issues encountered during system implementation, upgrades, or support issues.
Perform preventative maintenance routines to ensure proper system operation with a focus on trend analysis and documentation of results.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills
Unique combinations of multi‑site RF communications systems and computer/networking skills are required.
Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN IP networks, and proficiency in computer network installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems including cabling, routers, switches, and firewalls.
Experience with installation, administration, and troubleshooting of:
Server virtualisation (VMware ESXi v.6+ or Microsoft Hyper‑V 2012+)
Server operating systems (Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012 R2, 2019)
Workstation operating systems (Windows 7 & 10)
Switches, routers, firewalls (HP and Juniper)
Knowledge of secure products/protocols (KMF, KVL, AES).
Knowledge of RF systems such as transmitters, receivers, filters, and antenna networks.
Experience working on Project 25 products (trunked and conventional).
Demonstrate systems experience with Motorola base stations (Quantar, G‑Series), consoles (MCC 7500, AXS), Astro‑25 Master Site equipment, Astro‑25 Multisite and ASR equipment, channel banks and T1 circuits.
Knowledge of standard telephony and dedicated data circuits, and packet‑switching techniques.
Experience with logging recording systems.
Skilled in the use of various communications test equipment including communication system analyzers (S412E LMR Master, Viavi 3920B), RF power sensors, Ethernet test sets (Anritsu 9090A, VeeX MTX150, T‑BERD 5800), T1 test sets, and TIMS (Transmission Impairment Measurement Set).
Experience with Motorola subscribers (APX, APX Next) and CPS programming software.
Highly computer‑literate with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Google G‑Suite applications.
Strong self‑management skills and “people” skills to work closely with Motorola’s customers and partner community, as well as Sales, Engineering, Project Management, and Customer Service teams.
Self‑motivated and self‑managed to perform duties at a distance from direct supervision.
Able to operate under stressful situations to resolve customer problems quickly.
Additional Skills
Must have excellent communication skills and always present a professional image.
Must have a valid driver’s license and no traffic violations.
Must be able to obtain background clearance as required by government customers.
Willing to travel extensively as needed ( > 75 %).
Ideally, the individual should have or be pursuing at least one industry network certification, such as:
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Security+
Juniper JNCIA
Cisco CCNA
Nokia NRS1
Salary Target base salary range: $59,500 – $110,600 USD.
