Position Purpose The Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic travels to job sites to perform skilled tasks in the repair of all fleet vehicles, machinery, motors, tools, and equipment used by the company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform all duties and responsibilities with Sunland's Core Values at the forefront.

Serve as a safety ambassador by complying with federal, state and local laws, as well as Company safety policy, enforcing safe work practices, and proactively identifying and remedying worksite hazards.

Direct all employees to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all safety guidelines at all times.

Conduct Safety Meetings to include daily PTP & weekly Tailgate Topics.

Work directly with Sunland supervisors to receive and prepare preventative maintenance (PM) work orders; relay PM work orders, assignments, messages and information to and from Mechanics.

Diagnose hydraulic systems.

Perform preventative maintenance on heavy equipment and trucks including pavers, rollers, milling machines, dump trucks, water trucks, boot trucks, front-end loaders, scrapers, skid steers, skip loaders and motor graders. May also maintain other fleet vehicles.

Fabricate, modify and install special equipment or replacement parts using mills, lathes, welders, torch sets, plasma cutters and metal cutting saws.

Perform routine maintenance checks and adjustments on fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires and clutches. Change filters, oil and lubricate vehicles and motor-driven equipment.

Proficient in troubleshooting machine systems including hydraulics, power trains and engines.

Proficient in component replacement with equipment such as transmissions, engines, differentials, torque converters and final drives.

Maintain work orders and perform work area inspections.

Prioritize repairs.

Work closely with all shop employees to maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Prepare work orders and cost material estimates.

Maintain inventory and order fuel, parts, tools, equipment and supplies.

Safety

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position and is subject to the company's drug and alcohol policy, as well as all OHSA regulations.

All employees must wear the appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all safety guidelines at all times as an essential part of their job responsibilities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Must be able to operate vehicles and trailers in a safe manner in compliance with local, state and federal traffic laws.

Must operate equipment, machinery and other tools in compliance with safety guidelines.

Must be able to work outside, frequently for long periods of time in all weather, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.

Must be able to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment in a variety of different situations.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

While working, the employee might be exposed to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles or machines and dust/debris.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time position. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Must be willing to travel to any and all jobsites without exception (including staying away from home if necessary.)

Minimum Qualifications Education and Work Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of experience working on heavy equipment.

High School Diploma or GED required.

Excellent decision making skills.

Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical systems.

Scanner diagnostics a plus: OTC vehicle/CAT ET.

Must be fluent in English, i.e., must be able to speak, read and write English.

Must meet FMCSA English proficiency requirements under 49 CFR 391.11(b)(2), including the ability to read and speak English, understand highway signs, respond to official inquiries, and make required entries on reports and records. To ensure Sunland Asphalt complies with this federal mandate, all 10K-CMV and CDL drivers will be required to complete and pass an English proficiency assessment.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

A current driver's license is required. A CDL license is preferred and may even be required for some departments/divisions.

Medical certification required.

Must have a clean motor-vehicle record.

Passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and background check is required.
