About the Team Our Advanced Optics group is developing nanostructured and metasurface‑based optical technologies that deliver compact, multifunctional, and high‑performance solutions for imaging and sensing systems in defense, space, and commercial environments. Our team specializes in transitioning advanced optical concepts from the lab to field‑ready systems.

Position Overview CFD Research is seeking a talented optical scientist or engineer to lead R&D in next‑generation imaging and sensing systems enabled by metasurface and diffractive optics. The selected candidate will serve as a Principal Investigator on multiple projects, managing technical execution, budgets, and customer relationships. This individual will play a key role in growing the optics portfolio, mentoring junior engineers, and helping shape the strategic direction of the group.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, modeling, and experimental validation of advanced optical systems using metasurfaces, diffractive, and refractive elements.

Serve as Principal Investigator for multiple programs, responsible for technical execution, reporting, and sponsor interaction.

Develop winning technical proposals in collaboration with internal and external partners.

Author high‑quality technical reports and peer‑reviewed publications.

Transition developed technologies to defense, space, and commercial applications.

Mentor junior engineers and scientists, fostering a culture of innovation and technical excellence.

Basic Qualifications

Master's degree in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, with 5+ years of post‑degree experience in applied optics or photonics research.

Demonstrated success leading research projects as PI or key technical lead.

Proven track record of writing and winning competitive proposals.

Publication record in top‑tier optics and photonics journals.

Strong foundation in optical system design, wave optics modeling, and laboratory experimentation.

U.S. citizenship required; ability to obtain a security clearance.

Desired Qualifications

Ph.D. in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline with 3+ years of post‑degree experience in applied optics or photonics research would be a plus.

Experience with metasurface or diffractive optics design and fabrication.

Background in imaging, sensing, or laser systems.

Experience mentoring or leading small technical teams.

Interest in technology transition and commercialization.
