Overview
Olmsted County Office of the County Attorney is seeking Assistant, Associate and Senior Attorneys to provide legal representation in District Court and to advise county agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Assistant Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Minnesota or will be licensable within six months.
Associate Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school, licensed to practice law in Minnesota and three years of experience in relevant private practice, relevant public‑sector practice, or a combination.
Senior Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school, licensed to practice law in Minnesota and six years of experience in relevant private practice, relevant public‑sector practice, or a combination.
Nature of Work The County Attorney’s office performs routine and complex professional legal work. Duties include preparation and presentation of cases in District Court, preparation of briefs, findings, and legal documents, and providing legal advice to law enforcement, probation officers and social workers.
Examples of Work
Prepares and presents criminal cases in District Court covering all levels of criminal offenses and traffic matters.
Provides legal advice and direction to law enforcement officers, probation officers, and social workers regarding legal options.
Appears in court at all stages of proceedings and provides information and legal arguments to the court.
Prepares for and represents the State in contested matters, court trials, and jury trials before the District Court.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and the duties of the County Attorney.
Skill in conducting basic legal research, using computers and negotiation techniques.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, present to groups, interview victims and witnesses, analyze facts and present legal arguments.
Ability to manage time and prioritize workload.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Office environment, handling up to 10 pounds, standing, walking, reaching, typing/data entry. Regular attendance essential.
Additional Considerations
Position is based in Rochester, MN and is not remote eligible.
