Job Summary
This position is responsible for supervising assigned recycling functions.
Major Duties
Trains, assigns, directs, and supervises the work of personnel.
Maintains and repairs trucks and equipment.
Answers and returns calls from the general public.
Delivers, repairs, and picks up recycling carts.
Coordinates logistics for shipping recyclable materials.
Operates baler.
Operates a recycling truck along a schedule’s route.
Sorts recycling products.
Maintains employee time sheets.
Supervises the work of work release inmates and other part-time personnel.
Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with five or more years of experience or service in a similar position.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge of recycling principles and practices.
Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.
Knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair principles.
Skill in directing the work of personnel.
Skill in planning, organization, and decision making.
Skill in providing customer services.
Skill in oral and written communication.

Complexity / Scope of Work
The work consists of varied supervisory, customer service, and equipment operation duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in assigned recycling operations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.
Contacts
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city personnel, vendors, and the general public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate persons, and provide services.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
This position has direct supervision over the Recycling Truck Drivers and assigned work release inmates and part-time personnel.
