TRAVEL Welder / Fabricator – Heavy Gauge Carbon Steel (FCAW)
Project located in York PA
Project Overview We are seeking skilled Welder/Fabricators to support the Rocky Mountain Hydro‑Electric Plant Headcover Refurbishment Project. This project involves weld and fabrication work on large headcover components.
This is a heavy‑gauge, multi‑pass carbon steel welding role involving large components that are pre‑heated up to 300°F, significant grinding, and occasional work in tight or confined spaces.
Responsibilities
Perform heavy‑gauge carbon steel welding using Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW / Dual Shield)
Complete multi‑pass welds on large fabricated components
Follow blueprints, weld symbols, and WPS requirements
Set and adjust welding parameters to optimize weld quality and performance
Conduct grinding of fillets and back‑gouges to meet quality standards
Operate plasma cutting and carbon arc gouging equipment as required
Produce welds that meet stringent quality standards, including MT (Magnetic Particle) and UT (Ultrasonic) inspections
Meet defined output, quality, and safety metrics
Required Skills & Experience (Must‑Haves)
Proficient in
blueprint reading
and strong understanding of
weld symbols
Fully proficient in
FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding)
on
heavy‑gauge carbon steel
Welding certifications are
preferred
Ability to set welding parameters per
WPS
and make adjustments as needed
Proven ability to produce
high‑quality welds
suitable for MT and UT testing
Experience with
grinding fillets and performing back‑gouging
Capable and willing to operate
plasma cutting and carbon arc gouging equipment
Ability to weld using
larger wire diameters
, including:
3/32” in flat and horizontal positions
1/16” in vertical positions
Work Environment
Shop‑based fabrication work
Welding on
large, heated components
(up to 300°F)
Physically demanding role requiring grinding and work in tight spaces
Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Chicago, IL.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $34.00/hr.
