Responsibilities

Perform routine animal control and law enforcement activities to safeguard citizens from dangerous and nuisance animals and enforce state and county laws.

Respond to calls for service from the Emergency Operations Center and capture, contain, and impound animals at‑large, including sick, injured, and vicious animals.

Patrol assigned area and enforce County and state animal control regulations, including the Pinal County Animal Control Ordinance and Arizona Revised Statutes.

Assist in investigating animal cruelty, neglect, excessive noise, bite allegations, and nuisance complaints; notify owners of violations; write reports; issue citations and warnings.

Contact individuals to discuss violations and alternatives for compliance, conduct follow‑up inspections, and verify compliance.

Assist in investigating requests for domestic and wildlife animal control, pick up and dispose of dead animals, seize animals under state and county laws, and relocate wild animals as needed.

Learn to euthanize sick, injured, unclaimed, and owner‑surrendered animals, both in the field and at the shelter.

Transport animals to the shelter and assist with animal care, shelter maintenance, and repair.

Maintain activity logs, records, and prepare technical documents for hearings and prosecutions.

Provide animal‑related information to the public, respond to questions about animal care, rabies, and other zoonotic disease control, and assist in setting up and conducting rabies vaccination and animal license clinics.

Work with other state and regional law enforcement agencies on wildlife and livestock incidents.

Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit’s service by offering suggestions and participating actively in the work team.

Maintain absolute confidentiality of work‑related issues, customer records, and restricted County information.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Two (2) years of experience working with animals.

Arizona residents must have a valid Arizona Driver’s License upon hire; newly established residents must obtain one within 30 days.

An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience may substitute for the minimum requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Specific technical training and certifications, such as National Animal Control Association (NACA) training.

Knowledge of basic laws, statutes, and ordinances governing animal control issues.

Knowledge of basic animal capture and control techniques and symptoms of common animal diseases.

Knowledge of geography, roads, and landmarks of County and surrounding areas.

Knowledge of regional animal care resources available to citizens.

Patience, care, and compassion in dealing with animals.

Skill in capturing, controlling, containing, and transporting sick, injured, and rabid animals.

Skill in caring for, maintaining, and safely operating specialized animal control tools and equipment.

Ability to identify symptoms and behaviors associated with rabies and other common domestic animal diseases.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and handle stressful situations and angry people.

Physical Demands The work requires exerting forces in excess of 100 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently, and up to 20 lbs constantly to move objects. Physical tasks include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, reaching, kneeling, lifting, pushing, pulling, standing, stooping, walking, performing repetitive motion, operating motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, and maintaining mental and visual acuity.
