Job Description
Lead the estimating process for commercial construction projects from early concept through final bid submission. Prepare detailed budgets, cost estimates, and proposals based on project plans and specifications. Collaborate with design teams to ensure plans are cost-effective, practical, and aligned with project timelines.
Responsibilities
Review drawings and documentation to calculate material, labor, and overall project costs.
Oversee subcontractor outreach, bid solicitation, and scope reviews to ensure competitive pricing.
Develop bid strategies, schedules, and general conditions for multiple projects.
Provide value engineering options and cost‑saving alternatives during preconstruction.
Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to stay informed on market pricing.
Implement best practices and tools to improve estimating accuracy and efficiency.
Participate in client meetings, proposal presentations, and RFP responses to support project acquisition.
Essential Skills
Strong knowledge of construction methods, codes, and industry standards.
Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, On‑Screen Takeoff, ProEst, WinEst).
Familiarity with scheduling tools (Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) and project management platforms.
Excellent leadership, analytical, and organizational skills.
Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
7–10+ years of experience in commercial construction estimating, including ground‑up and interior projects.
At least 3 years in a senior or leadership role within estimating.
Preferred experience with design‑build and negotiated GMP projects.
Work Environment Work in the office about 70% of the time, located in the East Village. Projects are all within central Iowa, with the furthest active project in Newton. The office has 17 employees and offers amenities such as an in‑office gym, and a company truck if available.
Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Des Moines, IA.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $130000.00/yr.
