Emergency Telecommunications Dispatcher

Responsibilities
Dispatcher and call taker of emergency and non‑emergency incidents; administrative and technical work in receiving and dispatching routine and emergency information; keeping official records; assisting in the administration of the standard operating procedures of the Communications Center providing 24 hour, seven day a week service for Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services; performing data entry and other Public Safety administrative duties.
Work under the supervision of the Communications Center Administrator; subject to limitations imposed by the Police and/or Fire Chiefs.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and act as an effective team member with professional judgment in making decisions within authority while following all protocols and procedures of the job and maintaining the Communications Center.
May receive direction in complex situations from Police, Fire, and/or Emergency Medical personnel or other Mutual Aid Agencies.
Qualifications
High school graduate or GED equivalent plus broad specialized training involving the use of semi‑complex procedures; six months related experience and working knowledge of computers and general office practices such as typing, filing, accounting/bookkeeping.
Valid Massachusetts Driver License; must submit to and successfully pass a Massachusetts Board of Probation and an Interstate Inquiry Index record check; must comply with minimal qualification guidelines established by the Criminal History Systems Board.
Must acquire within six months of hire the following certifications: First Responder/CPR, LEAPS/NCIC, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Enhanced 911, and APCO Basic Telecommunication.
Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously (typing, answering phone, speaking on radio); working knowledge with computers, data entry terminals, and technical terminology; learn and use required computer software and equipment.
Ability to think clearly and act appropriately in crisis situations, handle high levels of stress, interact with the general public in a customer‑service environment, remain calm with irate callers, and deal tactfully with the public and town personnel.
Attention to detail, accuracy, reading, writing and speaking clearly, providing clear directions over radio or telephone, eliciting needed information from individuals under stress.
Comprehensive understanding of departmental activities, policies and procedures; independently initiate actions and make decisions supportive of policies and procedures; prepare and maintain detailed and accurate records/reports.
