Job Title/Role Summary Telecom Technician 3
is responsible for the installation, planning, organizing and scheduling of communications cabling and equipment to complete assigned work orders, including assigning tasks, ensuring work is installed in a high‑quality manner and performing quality inspections. The role monitors task completion, compliance and prevents safety issues in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards and oversees a crew of five or more technicians and apprentices. The technician should have experience installing equipment that involves hand tools and power tools, a working understanding of telecom systems, blueprints, and codes and standards. Each technician must pursue qualification as a BICSI Technician. Telecom technicians are full‑time employees with company benefits.
Responsibilities
Have knowledge of and understand the safe use of hand tools and various power tools
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Follow safety policies and procedures
Actively participate in daily safety and work briefings
Install various types of low‑voltage cable
Install, inspect, terminate, test, and troubleshoot ISP/OSP telecommunications systems (fiber optics, Cat 5, 6, 6A, and associated equipment such as pathways, cable trays, cabinets, racks, telecom devices, prefabricated components and assemblies, and grounding systems)
Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure (copper and fiber cables, active and passive components) using electronic devices
Sketch rack elevations, floor, and wall elevations
Participate in design document reviews and activities to ensure timely, cost‑effective, and quality project outcomes
Install, power up and connect fiber uplinks of network equipment into a telecommunications cabinet/rack
Calculate grounding conductor, conduit sizing and raceway layouts
Produce a 4‑week look‑ahead plan to include productivity planning for assigned scopes of work, material procurement, staging and tracking weekly productivity to plans
Train and supervise apprentices in a team environment to install cable from telecommunication rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO) following drawings and run lists, ensuring cables are installed methodically and bundled properly at TR for ease of dressing and termination
Maintain accurate as‑built drawings – update and log onto master record contract drawings at least once a week
Perform quality assurance checks of team work to ensure cable install meets all applicable requirements
Maintain a clean work area and participate in job‑site cleanup
Secure company tools and materials daily
Up to 50% travel
Qualifications
6+ years of prior experience in the commercial communications industry
Age 18 or older
High school diploma or GED required
Excellent safety record, valid driver’s license, and clean driving record for company‑owned vehicle use
Successfully pass a background check and drug test
Reliable transportation to and from the jobsite
Ability to pass a basic telecommunications knowledge test
Demonstrated experience and ability to read and understand plans and specifications
Strong communication, time‑management and organization skills to meet deadlines and quality objectives
Consistently report to work on time, work well with others to accomplish a common goal and maintain a safe work environment
Wear long pants and a shirt that covers the shoulders by six inches (clothing not provided by company)
Provide basic tools from the provided tool list prior to first day of employment
Abilities
Ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly—proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed
Relocate a 12‑foot stepladder without assistance
Work at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders
Walk, climb, lift, squat, crawl, kneel, push, pull, and reach overhead on a routine and repetitive basis
Possess good vision (may be corrected), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English
May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools
Recognize when something is wrong or likely to go wrong (problem recognition only)
Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions
