Summary An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high‑quality, cost‑effective care to patients within the APP’s scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards. The APP intensivist is a member of the UNC critical care team. Their primary responsibility is to provide continuous and comprehensive care for acutely ill and critically ill patients in an intensive care setting. This position reports to the Medical Director(s) of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). The APP intensivist has specialized skills and knowledge related to the acute and critical care settings in which s/he practices. He/she performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services. He/she collaborates with all members of the care team to deliver efficient, safe, high‑quality care in accordance with UNC policies and procedures. The position may also serve as a resource to acute‑care floor and step‑down units if special needs or medical emergencies arise in those clinical areas.

Responsibilities

Clinical: obtains relevant health and medical history, performs thorough physical assessment, reviews and interprets diagnostic tests, develops differential diagnoses, implements treatment plans including prescribing and ordering evidence‑based pharmacological agents consistent with guidelines, schedules follow‑up, incorporates hospital initiatives, conducts preventive health screening, maintains clear records, keeps up‑to‑date knowledge of disease processes and specialty literature, synthesizes clinical data for correct diagnoses, revises plan of care, prioritizes work, supports staff for efficient client flow, maintains productivity, participates in projects to improve productivity, and performs medical procedures consistent with guidelines.

Education: provides professional education to clients and families regarding medical condition, treatment, and follow‑up; collaborates with clinicians and staff; develops educational materials; provides instruction to physicians, staff, and students; identifies and achieves continuous learning needs; attends education programs.

Leadership: provides instruction to physicians, staff, and students; precepts, shadows, lectures, trains, participates in community outreach and network programs; demonstrates understanding of healthcare contexts and improves delivery; leads interdisciplinary systems improvements.

Professionalism: interacts with patients, families, coworkers, and team in a respectful, courteous manner; responds quickly to meet customer needs; shares responsibility for workload; accepts responsibility for outcomes.

Quality/Research: engages in continuous quality improvement, identifies and implements processes for improvement; consults with management, leads interdisciplinary teams, revises protocols, influences policy, and develops clinical programs or services to improve patient care.

Education Requirements

Completion of an accredited graduate‑level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider in the state of North Carolina (e.g., Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist). Board certification if required by the Department.

Management strongly prefers NP candidates be board certified in acute care (ACNP‑C or ACNPC‑AG).

Professional Experience Requirements

No prior experience required.

Management prefers NPs and PAs with prior critical care experience.

Demonstrated clinical competency, effective leadership, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrated written and verbal communication and strong analytical skills; accurate documentation; effective interaction to ensure successful patient care.
