play a critical role in upholding the YNHHS mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives. The RN practices professional nursing within the legal and ethical framework established by the Connecticut Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nursing Practice, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the YNHHS Professional Practice Model. The RN’s professional role is exemplified by leadership, delegation, collaboration, effective communication, and a commitment to ensuring quality outcomes. The RN provides care that establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with patients and families, integrates cultural and diversity considerations into practice, communicates and works collaboratively with the health care team, and respects patients’ values and preferences in holistic data collection, care planning, and evaluation.

Responsibilities

Standards of Practice: The RN applies the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice (2015) by utilizing the nursing process components—assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to provide competent nursing care. The RN coordinates care delivery and transitions, promotes health, and evaluates progress toward outcomes.

Standards of Professional Performance: The RN engages in professional behaviors aligned with the ANA Standards of Professional Performance (2015), including ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence‑based practice, quality of practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health. The RN is accountable for professional actions, practices ethically, supports cultural diversity, collaborates with stakeholders, leads within the professional setting, seeks current knowledge, integrates evidence and research, contributes to quality nursing practice, and maintains safe environmental health.

Qualifications Education Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. All newly hired registered nurses must hold current BCLS certification or obtain it within one month of hire.

Experience Registered Nurse is the foundational job description for all RNs. All RNs are encouraged to advance through the SPIRE clinical advancement program.

Licensure Licensed and a currently registered nurse in the State of Connecticut. Clinical specialty certification highly encouraged.

Physical Demand Requires prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing, and touch. May be exposed to infectious diseases and physical, mental, and emotional illnesses, including end-of‑life conditions and death. Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care. Standing/walking for more than half of the day, frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting. Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
