About The Job The Director, External R&D (ER&D) will be responsible for sustaining Sanofi Vaccines’ portfolio of new vaccines, vaccine candidates, and vaccine technologies by identifying, evaluating, and developing strategic partnerships with the global external network of public and private industry organizations. The position reports to and works closely with the Global Head, External R&D, Vaccines R&D.
Location Waltham, MA or Swiftwater, PA
Main Responsibilities
Proactively scan the external network of companies, academic institutions, and government-sponsored R&D organizations to identify and evaluate scientific and technological innovations relevant to Sanofi Vaccines.
Develop and maintain relationships with the vast external network of organizations through various platforms, including partnering meetings and networking conferences (e.g., World Vaccine Congress, BIO, JPMorgan Healthcare).
Provide critical scientific and technical analysis of external opportunities and collaborate with internal stakeholders (R&D, Medical Affairs, Franchise Strategy) to formulate recommendations on external innovations.
Work closely with Business Development and Legal teams to support negotiations with potential external partners, providing scientific and technical input for deal structure evaluations and due‑diligence support.
Present assessment outcomes to Vaccine Leadership and governance committees (EIEC, TARC) as appropriate.
Align external engagement strategies with needs and priorities of internal stakeholders (R&D, mRNA Center of Excellence, Vaccine Portfolio Strategy, Vaccine Medical Affairs, Vaccine Public Franchise).
Collaborate with other teams within External Scientific Affairs to advance ESA’s mission, including scouting for licensing/acquisitions, external funding, and vaccine innovation projects.
About You Minimum Requirements
M.D. or Ph.D. in bacteriology, virology, immunology, non‑infectious disease, or another relevant scientific discipline.
7+ years of post‑graduate experience.
Skills & Capabilities
Experience in vaccine R&D and external partnering preferred.
Demonstrated interpersonal and influence skills across multiple levels.
Resourceful, entrepreneurial, and continuously updated on vaccine‑relevant innovation opportunities.
Strong teamwork and negotiation abilities.
Fluent in English (verbal and written) with the ability to work in an international context.
Willingness to travel up to 15% per year, domestic or international.
