Job Description The
Medical Laboratory Scientist - Generalist
plays a critical role in performing, reviewing, and reporting clinical diagnostic tests to aid our providers—urologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, and APPs—in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. Working directly under the supervision of the Laboratory Operations Manager, the Medical Technologist is responsible for clinical chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, microbiology, and molecular testing. The responsibilities include laboratory training, equipment maintenance, quality control, quality assurance, and calibrations. The individual will ensure the timely processing and handling of specimens and ensure performance metrics, such as turnaround times, are met.
Responsibilities
Assists the Laboratory Operations Manager and/or Quality Specialists and Lead Medical Technologist in meeting regulatory agency requirements (CLIA, CAP, etc.).
Performs clinical chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, microbiology, and molecular testing, and provides coverage in these areas as needed by the operation.
Operates laboratory equipment and performs quality control (QC) procedures, instrument maintenance, calibration, and proficiency testing (PT) according to established laboratory protocol and manufacturer and regulatory requirements.
Performs, evaluates, and reports QC, and identifies and resolves any QC failures.
Investigates, documents, and resolves any specimen integrity or quality issues (pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical).
Plates, isolates, and identifies bacterial and other microorganisms present in body fluids and rectal swabs.
Processes isolates on automated instrumentation for identification and sensitivities.
Performs DNA extraction on various specimen types, manually and using an automated extraction instrument.
Sets up, loads, and runs qPCR equipment using proper pipetting etiquette and techniques, and following a unidirectional workflow for limiting contamination.
Prepares master mix for various microbiology analytes and antibiotic agents.
Analyzes qPCR results.
Verifies, records, and reports results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Troubleshoots and resolves instrumentation malfunctions and works with vendors on resolving instrument issues accordingly.
Centrifuges and aliquots specimens based on testing specifications.
Maintains meticulous records of specimens, procedures, and results.
Ensures proper labeling, tracking, and documentation of samples.
Monitors supplies and maintains adequate inventory levels.
Properly disposes of chemical hazardous waste according to laboratory and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) Accredited Certificate Program is required and will be verified prior to employment.
ASCP MLS or MT Certification is required and will be verified prior to employment.
Minimum of five (5) years of clinical pathology experience as a generalist.
At least one (1) year of experience in microbiology and molecular diagnostics is preferred.
Able to work weekends or holidays and provide weekday/weekend coverage and may require a weekend rotation as required by the operation.

Exceptional knowledge of the clinical pathology laboratory and its various disciplines.
Ability to multi‑task, be self‑motivated, dependable, and accountable in meeting deadlines.
Excellent computer software and data analysis skills.
Organized and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong customer service skills, including active listening and problem‑solving.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and be detail oriented.
Maintain HIPAA compliance and other requirements outlined by our accreditation and regulatory organizations.
Ability to type a minimum of 40 words per minute.
Job Type: PRN/PT, Weekends w/ some weekday coverage as available.
Pay Range: $38.00 – $41.00 per hour.
Actual compensation offered to candidates is based on work experience, education, skill level, and geographic location. Compensation may vary depending on the state or region in which the position is located, in accordance with applicable laws.
