The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at VCU Health is the largest and most advanced in the region, earning a Level 4 accreditation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Patients admitted to the EMU seek evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of seizures. Because inducing seizures can be dangerous, the nurse‑to‑patient ratio is lower than in other non‑ICU areas. The unit includes epileptologists, specialized nurse practitioners, and EEG technicians who monitor patients and provide feedback to nurses in real time. Collaboration across disciplines underpins our patient‑centered care culture.
