Nebraska Methodist Health System

as an Emergency Department RN. The role is a full‑time night shift position covering 6:45 pm–7:15 am, every third weekend, with a schedule of 24 or 36 hours per week.

Job Summary The Emergency Department RN is accountable for delivering high‑quality, compassionate care to patients of all ages, from newborns to adults, in urgent and critical situations. The RN will provide comprehensive assessment, develop individualized care plans, collaborate with providers, and support families during life’s most critical moments.

Responsibilities

Provide age‑appropriate care based on patient population criteria.

Identify opportunities to deliver individualized customer service and patient care.

Perform initial and ongoing assessments to determine nursing care needs.

Include data from patients and significant others as appropriate.

Prioritize data collection based on immediate needs.

Use assessment findings for discharge planning.

Develop and revise individualized care plans for optimal outcomes.

Collaborate with providers and other clinical disciplines.

Provide teaching tailored to patient health problems.

Implement interventions as per care plans safely and appropriately.

Follow unit nursing protocols and standards of care.

Apply current knowledge in nursing practice based on standards and research literature.

Screen all patients for domestic violence and for sepsis protocols.

Evaluate patient response to interventions and document outcomes.

Monitor post‑discharge care needs and maintain communication with families.

Deliver shift reports using SBAR and document all changes of care.

Recognize and address patient and family capabilities and limitations.

Perform technical skills competently and independently.

Maintain competence in equipment use, accurate cost accountability, and professional behavior.

Communicate effectively to solve problems and maintain professional relationships.

Perform restocking and upkeep of a clean environment.

Participate in meetings and committees as needed.

Initiate actions to prevent and correct risks, complete incident reporting, and communicate unresolved issues.

Work within the scope of practice defined by the State Nurse Practice Act.

Observe precautions when administering hazardous medications or handling excreta.

Delegate and evaluate staff plans in accordance with state provisions and professional standards.

Apply the framework of Right Task, Right Person, Right Communication, and Right Feedback in patient care.

Be fiscally accountable and professionally responsible for human and other resources.

Complete meaningful use requirements including medication reconciliation, E‑scribe pharmacy selection, and discharge vital signs within 15 minutes.

Schedule Night shift, 6:45 pm–7:15 am, every third weekend; 24 or 36 hours per week.

Requirements Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited college of nursing; or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with BSN/ MSN obtained within five years of hire.

Successful completion of annual mandatory education requirements.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Experience

No prior experience required if specialty not listed.

Preferred experience: 2 years in the Nebraska Methodist Hospital Emergency Department or in an Intensive Care Unit.

License/Certifications

Current valid Nebraska RN license, state‑wide compact license, or temporary permit while awaiting licensure.

American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 3 months of hire.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) required within 2 years.

Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) required within 2 years.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Preferred: National Certification Corporation (NCC) certification within 1 year of eligibility; Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) and Certified Emergency Nursing (CEN).

Skills and Knowledge

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments.

Proficiency in computer systems required for departmental and hospital information systems.

Physical Requirements Medium work: up to 50 lb. Requires occasional climbing, crawling, kneeling, sitting, balancing, carrying, crouching, keyboarding, lifting, pulling, pushing, repetitive motions, stooping, twisting, standing, walking. Frequent tasks include reaching, speaking, hearing, seeing, and touching. Rare tasks involve radiation exposure and hazardous chemical, biological, and mechanical hazards.
