Athletic Program Specialist
Town of Fuquay-Varina, Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, United States
Performs professional work in planning, coordinating, implementing, and supervising youth and adult athletic programs in the Town. An employee in this class plans, coordinates, and implements athletic programs for citizens of the community. Work involves considerable planning and scheduling of activities and for facilities usage, and contact with participants, officiating personnel, coaches, contracted staff, and community groups for assigned sports. Work varies with seasons but includes tasks such as addressing complaints and responding to inquiries; coordinating schedules and needed equipment; creating league practice and game schedules; supervising contracted hourly staff; submitting webpage updates and posting schedules and changes online; coordinating field and facility rentals; and assisting with registration and administrative work at the Community Center. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and policies and requires judgmental discretion in the planning and delivery of service. Employees are subject to hazards in parks and recreation including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and may be subject to regulations on protections from bloodborne pathogens. Work is under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Administrator and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, through observation and through discussions surrounding public acceptance.
Responsibilities
Plans, organizes, and promotes athletic events and leagues for youth and adults in a variety of sports including football, softball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and basketball, and dance.
Responds to email, phone, and personal inquiries; provides program information; addresses; responds to concerns, complaints and questions from citizens and program participants.
Maintains participant information; updates rule books, manuals, and handbooks; creates promotional materials; publicizes programs through a variety of media outlets.
Plans, schedules, and supervises activities, facilities, supplies, and equipment needed for programs. coordinates staff, official, coach and scorekeeper schedules for games.
Makes periodic observation and evaluation of programs assigned for quality of service or instruction, proper use of equipment and facilities, sportsmanship, participation, and feedback from the events.
Supervises a variety of hourly field supervisor employees and volunteer coaches, instructors, and officials; recruits volunteers and appropriately trains staff for various functions assigned; submits timesheets for payment.
Maintains inventory of equipment and ensures proper maintenance and storage; makes recommendation for new equipment as needed; processes invoices.
Performs a variety of administrative tasks including maintain data on attendance, fees for residents/non-residents, costs, and other related program information; enters registration and attendance information; prepares regular and special reports as required.
Plans and requests budget needs; purchases supplies and materials for designated program area; coordinates maintenance needs with maintenance staff.
Assists other program staff with special events or departmental programs during the year.
Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of recreational and educational programs, and current literature, trends, and developments in the field of public recreation and athletic programming.
Working knowledge of organizational policies and procedures related to budgeting, purchasing, and personnel.
Working knowledge of modern supervisory principles including communications, motivations, performance coaching, leadership, team building, etc., and of safe practices in recreation program activity and facility management.
Ability to effectively plan, execute and evaluate a variety of programs and activities.
Ability to understand and work with different age groups and to assess the needs and interests of potential program participants.
Ability to plan and coordinate the work of limited-service workers and volunteers.
Ability to express ideas effectively and communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, special populations, citizens, employees and other public and private groups and agencies.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of standing, walking, balancing, crawling, reaching, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, operate a computer, perform extensive reading, utilize measuring devices, and inspect work of others.
Education and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation administration, physical education, or related degree and experience in recreational programming related to athletics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of (or ability to obtain) Certified Youth Sports Administrator preferred.
Special Requirements
NC Driver’s License.
