The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) is seeking a board‑certified veterinarian (ABVP – Shelter Medicine Practice) to serve as the Director of Shelter Medicine. The director will lead the current shelter medicine service and outreach activities, providing spay/neuter training, didactic education, clinical services and consults to local animal shelters and rescues, as well as community outreach clinics and research. The successful candidate will strengthen existing relationships, develop new programs and increase community outreach in shelter medicine and access to care. Startup funds are available to support outreach program development or preliminary research funding.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and strategic direction for the shelter medicine program, including clinical service, teaching, research, and outreach.

Develop and implement community outreach and teaching programs.

Supervise the Companion Animal Initiative of Tennessee (CAIT) program and staff.

Establish and oversee a shelter medicine residency program.

Manage financial accounts and budget.

Lead grant writing efforts to solicit and maintain program donors.

Clinical Service (15–35%)

Conduct shelter consultations across the region and recommend improvements, outbreak management, SOPs and best practices.

Provide backup for spay/neuter services as needed.

Offer clinical service for access‑to‑care clinics.

Didactic Teaching (5–10%)

Teach elective courses in the professional veterinary medicine curriculum with other Shelter Medicine faculty.

Provide lectures for the core DVM curriculum.

Research (5–25%)

Conduct collaborative research related to administrative and clinical activities or other innovative topics.

Academic Service (5%)

Serve on College of Veterinary Medicine and university committees.

Demonstrate leadership in the discipline of shelter medicine through participation in the Association of Shelter Veterinarians or similar organizations.

Develop and deliver continuing education for local and regional groups.

Required Qualifications

DVM or equivalent degree.

Board certification in shelter medicine (ABVP).

Minimum five years of veterinary clinical experience.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative working style.

Leadership and program development experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Post‑graduate degree in shelter medicine practice, preventive medicine, epidemiology, population medicine, public health, and/or information systems.

Didactic and/or laboratory teaching experience.
