Manages all Cemetery operations to ensure public needs are being met; performs directly related work as required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration; and

Considerable experience in cemetery operations; or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

NOTE: COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED PRIOR TO THE APPLICATION DEADLINE TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR EDUCATION.

Willingness to work a flexible schedule that will include weekends, extended days and on‑call status.

Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Pesticide Applicator's Certification.

Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post‑employment offer physical examination and drug screen.

Prepares operating budget requests, Capitol Improvement Projects, outlay, and equipment replacement for approval of Business Manager.

Locates specific spaces for burial or disinterment on short notice.

Supervises and ensures compliance with all relevant state codes concerning the burial of human remains.

Maintains thorough and accurate records of all information relating to burials and lot purchases for monitoring and revenue purposes.

Represents Cemetery operations to the public, including providing information on services, investigating complaints and ensures solid public relations and adequate behavior of work crews within the cemetery environment.

Organizes daily activities of office and maintenance personnel.

Supervises cemetery crews, including overseeing all operations, distributing work orders and inspecting cemetery maintenance.

Serves as a hands‑on crew leader for all operations, including seeding, fertilizing, watering, mowing, grave and foundation layout and services, snow removal and sanding.

Inspects cemetery monument foundations, monument installation, mowing, leaf removal, fence repair, review of burial orders, and review of foundation orders.

Coordinates burial areas with families, including providing spaces for both pre‑need and need lots.

Trains staff on operation of all equipment and standard operating procedures.

Organizes, coordinates and monitors the work of private contractors.

Prepares accurate and thorough reports of all cemetery activities.

Ensures all work crews operate with an adherence to prescribed safety rules and procedures.

Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.

Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.

Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio‑visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas.

Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.

Maintains on‑call status.

Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
