The Phlebotomist is responsible for both performing blood draws and managing the administrative tasks associated with laboratory services. This dual role ensures that patients receive quality care while maintaining efficient lab operations.
Duties:
- Responsible for patient reception and registration for laboratory and radiology procedures, record keeping specimen collection e.g. drug screens, paternity testing, and therapeutic phlebotomy. Call and schedule patients for radiology/laboratory procedures that require appointments.
- Perform venipunctures and capillary draws to collect blood samples from patients
- Ensure proper identification and labeling of specimens to maintain accuracy
- Follow infection control and safety protocols during blood collection procedures
- Greet and assist patient as they arrive for laboratory services, ensuring a welcoming environment; obtain appropriate paperwork for record release (ROI) and ABNs
- Explain procedures to patients and answer any questions they may have to alleviate concerns
- Schedule appointments and manage patient flow within the laboratory
- Process patient registrations, including verifying insurance information and obtaining necessary consent forms
- Prepare collected specimens for testing, including proper storage and transportation to the laboratory
- Maintain an organized and clean work area, adhering to laboratory safety standards
- Accurately enter patient and test information into laboratory information system
- Maintain thorough documentation of laboratory procedures and results
- Collaborate with laboratory staff and healthcare providers to ensure efficient operation and high quality patient care
- Communicate any issues or discrepancies related to specimen collection or patient information to the director
- Participate in quality control measures and adhere to laboratory protocols to ensure accurate test results
- Assist in maintaining laboratory compliance with regulatory standards
- Complete order requisitions when given telephone or verbal orders by doctors and nurses and follow up to get the required signed copy form the provider
- Accept water samples for testing and distribute water results as appropriate
Requirements:
- Phlebotomy certification within six (6) months of date of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required upon hire
