Job Description - P10 Janitor 2026 Form – CSA ONLY (2500007J) Job Description P10 Janitor 2026 Form – CSA ONLY - ( 2500007J ) Description This form is only for current Customer Service Assistants as part of the Paragraph-10 (P-10) process Performs various janitorial duties in cleaning and maintaining assigned facilities, buildings and related areas. Qualifications PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Maintains rail system stations, towers, agent’s booths, stairways, offices, washrooms, work areas, lunch rooms and related buildings and facilities in a clean, neat and orderly condition. Performs janitorial duties within rail system buildings, facilities and related areas. Picks up debris, sweeps, dustsubs floors, woodwork, etc. Washes windows, signs, tables, sinks lavatories, etc. Empties trash containers and removes trash to disposal location. Cleans and dusts office furniture and related items. Cleans chrome on turnstiles, escalators, agent booths, elevators, benches and handrails. Operates floor cleaning machines and uses mops, pails, sponges, brushes, cleaning chemicals, window washing equipment, vacuum cleaners and related material and tools. Utilizes appropriate cleaning solvents and materials to remove graffiti, blood, urine, feces, etc. from buildings, structures and facilities throughout the rail system. Removes ice and snow and spreads salt and sand from stairways, walkways, station platforms and other areas. Regulates and monitors heating and air-conditioning equipment. Observes, detects and reports non-operating or malfunctioning equipment and apparatus, defects in heating, plumbing, electrical and related systems and equipment. Monitors and reports any suspicious person, item, etc. Guides passengers to secure areas. Directs emergency personnel to problem areas. Required to properly identify and report any suspicious person, package or item. Required to assist with the safety of passengers during emergency situations. Required to guide emergency personnel to a specified problem. Assists in restoring to normal operations. Performs related duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to this position are the following jobs: EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Required to submit to and pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration. Must pass a physical examination and perform the physical activities associated with this position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be able to stand to do most tasks performed on feet, walk up and down stairs in order to get to work sites; work performed requires walking, e.g. sweeping. Must be able to lift trash, supplies, shoveling snow-up to 50 pounds, carry sand, salt, supplies, trash up to 50 pounds, push snow off platforms, and pull water hoses to flush out subways. Must be able to climb ladders to access windows, stairs to platforms and balance by walking track to access work site. Must be able to stoop to clean escalators, elevators, aluminum handrails, kneel to clean electric toilets, graffiti removal, and crouch under low structures for cleaning. Must be able to reach to clean tops of agent booths, and tall windows, handle dustpans, brooms, pails, and sponges, finger to regulate HVAC apparatus. And feel surfaces for cleanliness, heating elements for heat. Must be able to talk to report vandalism, malfunctioning equipment numerous reports and hearing when working near moving rail cars for safety. Must be able to see near to inspect and report tags on fire extinguishers, reading labels, far to see moving rail cars when on the track and color vision to identify slow zone tack signs from distance – color coded. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Required to have knowledge of proper cleaning methods, techniques, materials and supplies relating to locations and surface to be cleaned. Required to know how to properly and safely use cleaning solvents, chemicals and machinery and their proper application in a variety of situations and conditions. Required to write legibly and express oneself in a clear manner. Must possess the communication skills necessary to understand written and verbal instructions relating to this position. WORKING CONDITIONS Exposed to inside and outside environments. Exposed to extreme cold, heat and wet and/or humid conditions, when performing work outdoors in all weather conditions. Exposed to noise when working near trains in subway system, vehicular traffic along expressways. Exposed to mechanical hazards when testing escalator functioning and power operated cleaning equipment. Exposed to electrical hazards when working near 600 VDC rail and energized apparatus. Exposed to chemicals in which there can be burns from solvents, acids and ammonia. Exposed to heights when working from ladders and from train platforms, subject to falling. Exposed to atmospheric conditions such as fumes from diesel, graffiti remover, ammonia, street vehicle exhaust, odors from urine, feces, vomit, dusts from moving vehicles, sweeping, especially in subways, and mist from graffiti remover. May be called to work unscheduled hours in emergency situations, e.g. severe snow, sleet and rainstorms; fires or accidents.
