About We Can Ride
We Can Ride is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and Premier Accredited Equine Assisted Activities and Therapy Center, serving the Minnesota community since 1982. As the oldest and largest therapeutic equine program in the state, we connect humans and horses to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and meet the evolving needs of the greater community.
Our programs serve individuals - from young children working with occupational therapists to adults managing mobility or cognitive challenges. Equine experience is not required; passion for our mission is.
Board Role Overview We Can Ride is seeking an engaged, mission-driven individual to join our Board of Directors. At this time, we are particularly interested in candidates with finance or financial oversight experience to help strengthen governance and support the organization’s long-term sustainability.
Board members partner closely with the Executive Director to provide strategic guidance, ensure fiscal responsibility, support fundraising efforts, and steward the organization’s mission and impact.
This is an uncompensated volunteer position.
Priority Expertise We are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
Finance, accounting, budgeting, or financial oversight
Audit, internal controls, or nonprofit financial management
Business or operational finance in small-to-mid-sized organizations
Nonprofit experience is helpful but not required.
Key Responsibilities Board members are expected to:
Attend monthly virtual board meetings
Participate in up to three in-person board retreats or planning sessions annually (half-day)
Support and advocate for We Can Ride’s mission, programs, and community impact
Partner with the Executive Director to advance strategic priorities
Participate in strategic planning and goal-setting
Review and approve the annual budget and support fiscal accountability
Support fundraising through participation, advocacy, and relationship-building
Leverage personal and professional networks to identify opportunities for funding, partnerships, and community engagement
Time Commitment & Term
Approximately 3–5 hours per month
Board terms are two or three years, renewable for up to six consecutive years
